Title: Grain Buy.
Post by: rebel on October 08, 2016, 09:27:02 PM
Chris from Malting Company of Ireland is anxious to get the club on board. He will give the club same rate as Micro-breweries but we need to buy 20 bags over a 12 month period. The malt type are 1) Lager Malt,2) Ale Malt, 3) Stout Malt,4) Whiskey Malt.

Each Bag is 25 kg can be crushed or whole.

The real bonus is the malt can be taken as needed by the bag.

Any interest please pm.

This might be a good way for some co-operation between the Rebel and Lee Valley clubs.
Together our buying power would be stronger.

Finishing up order last minute orders  welcome.

The following are details.

1) Price €15 per bag ( I don't want to be messing with coins, small profit goes to Lee Valley Brewing Club) .

2) All bags will be crushed ( just to keep it simple)

3) 3 to 4 days notice for collection required ( Malting's very busy give Chris some time).

4) You can draw bags one by one or all in one go with in 12 months.

5) Cash in advance can be given to brewers in Franciscan Well who will hold on my behalf.

6) All monies paid by Friday 21st .

I would take a few, but only in whole.
Surely if available all year round whole isn't a problem...

Would like to buy some malt. However, not sure if I will get it all brewed before winter sets in. Any advice on how long whole malt will stay  fresh if stored in a garage in cold weather?

In a sealed container up to 12 months.
6-8 months exposed to air. Test I do is nibble it, it should be crisp and hard not chewy and soft, and that's a good test for any malt

Seems a lot of hassle for you and everyone else to physically bring the money into town. Any way they would just give us a club rate individually?

I'd say the big attraction for MCI is to cut down the paperwork. If they do a single combined deal, it's just one invoice. They lose that advantage if they have to bill everybody separately.

Rebel, do you have a name of somebody in the Well we should give cash to? We could mark envelopes "Lee Valley Grain Buy" or we could mark it for someone's attention if we have a name.
And thanks for organising this. Much appreciated.

Hi Lads, this is the final terms of grain buy.

1)  Price per bag €15.00 crushed or not crushed.

2)  Bags can be drawn one by one or all in together

3) Collection day Friday only with 3-4 days notice.

If monies are in envelope with no instructions you will be put down for crushed ale malt.

5) Final day of payment, Thursday 27th October close of pub hours.

sorry lads my mistake the price is plus vat at 23 per cent. €15 plus vat equals €18.45 say €18.50 per bag. I know some of you wont like this. All I can do is get you Minister Michael Nonnan number and fully support you in your endeavour to become vat exempt.
Title: Re: Grain Buy.
Post by: mr hoppy on October 17, 2016, 11:56:28 PM
TBH it's still a fair price if you ask me, and MCI always quote the ex-VAT price if you ring them up. :-)

I'm a bit confused by the payment method though. Are you asking people to drop the money off to the brewpub, and if so to whom should we give it? In one message you mention the brewers and in another you say payment has to be in by pub closing time, so I'm not sure.

Reason I ask is I'm not working in town and so I won't be able to go in during business hours.
Title: Re: Grain Buy.

drop it in any time up to closing. the brewers are usually there if not one of the bar staff.

Hi Brian,

I am away until the following week - would be looking to collect around Weds 11th. I assume I just contact MCI directly myself to arrange?

Do they have a list detailing who's ordered what or how should we manage this in future?

Thanks

Malt buy paid for to Chris O'Flynn at malting's. I will have vouchers for everybody by tuesday.  collection is fridays only between 2 to 3.  Chris was very positive about home brewer's , so please respect his time and goodwill. please order bags 5-7 in-advance. especially crushed.  He has no problem with more orders, I will continue to act for the clubs if required. Other clubs beside Leevalley,Cork city Rebels and East Cork Rebels are also welcome to join any future buys.

Was speaking to Chris in MCI quite some time ago about a tour of the maltings.
We should rekindle this and get a group together.
I'll start a thread.

Sent from my Samsung Note Sev... Fire! Fire!

He did offer a tour the Friday morning during the beer festival to us but most are at work.
For anyone never been around a maltings MCI is pretty amazing and not to be missed especially from Chris who is really passionate about it.

Picked mine up today.

Phwoar... the smell of crushed malt was glorious, my stuff was bagged day before yesterday and Pat in the bagging shed printed off the batch specific spec sheets, no problems, when I asked - couldn't ask for more really.

Very happy, and looking forward to getting some brews on, thanks rebel and Peter in the Lee Valley Brewing Club!

Please take grain  as quickly as possible, only 6 bags out of 43 collected so far.  I want to make sure the maltings will allow the group to buy again.

I thought we had all year.
'...as needed by the bag'.
I'll have to throw out the Santa presents to make space. :(

Just to clarify,
Quote from: Rebel4) You can draw bags one by one or all in one go with in 12 months.
is now "Take them all in one go as soon as possible", right?

Lord Eoin please don't be smart, I keep in contact with Maltings and if I dont do what I am told even if that moves there will be no group buy again unless we all play ball.

Not being smart but I simply dont have room for the grain I've paid for as I couldnt leave it in the shed  - have rats out there. I'd get divorced if I brought them all into the house.

They've been paid upfront well in advance for the bags so I would have thought this is still a good deal for them. Are they saying that they now wont hold them for us?

I'm not being smart either. It was a simple question to clarify contradicting statements.
I just want to know how I need to take the grain.
If we need to take it all in one go, then I will. No worries.

Is there somewhere outside of MCI you could store it temporarily guys just to get it moved off site?

The man in the malting's , assumed about 25 % would be gone by now at least 50 % by Christmas . It seems everybody had the same idea, to store malt . I got no malt for myself and lost a small amount of money  on the deal. But that's my problem. So lads take a few bags over the next couple of weeks. He will do it this time, but maybe not next time. I do not mind, but if we want to go again. The man in the malting's won't give the good rate next time.  I did a good bit of work on this thankless position of listening to both sides complain.

I know Chris very well and he will sort us out again if required.
Group buys can be a pain in the arse to organise and the devil is in the detail like Vat etc we've all been there, in this instance you missed the important fact of saying it needed to be shifted in timely fashion.
Let's not bicker though and find a way to resolve the issue and so I ask again guys is there anybody in Cork who has a space in a shed or warehouse to to resolve this problem?
My closest warehouse is waterford so I'm no help but I have a good line on rat poison if that's a concern.
What about contacting the local breweries would they store it on a temp basis?
Somebody must have a granny with a garage?
Be positive with solutions only guys please?

Ive got a van and a shed, store my grain in there in plastic boxes without any issue. Id be happy to pick up a bunch of grain and store it for a while if anyone wants.
I assumed the same thing, that there was no rush about taking the grain, think everyone did so thats probably why it isnt moving very fast. Now we know different there'll probably be a bit more movement, but as I said Id be happy to help with anyone stuck for storage.

Will collect the rest of mine in the next week or two.

Suggest these are organised quarterly. if we knew there would be one in March, July, September for example would be no need to stockpile.

Personally I picked mine up ASAP but I can hold some provided that anyone wanting to store grain at my house puts it in a rat proof bin. They are available in Atkins on the Straight Road Road for 20e.

Thanks lads for the storage offers btw. Will pick up one of those bins at Atkins.

On the plus side I got one of those bulldog mills because of this. The grain was like sugar puffs  - just like Skibeagle described.

Hopefully Chris at MCI isnt too cheesed off with this.

I can take 2 of my 4 on Friday. Is it ok to leave the remaining 2 or should I just take all 4?

It wasn't my plan but I'm collecting my 3 bags and 3 others on Friday.

I haven't had a chance to brew with it yet, but i tore a bag by accident and got a fine waft of fresh malty malt, tasted some and it's delicious and sweet. the crunchiest, freshest malt. yum
