I'm going to try make up some bottle crates this weekend. I've seen loads of different examples on the interweb and I've come up with a nice simple design. The crates will be stackable too.
I did a spread sheet to work out the cut lengths and it allows me to change the size of the crate and materials used for future crates.
Enjoy :)
The yellow fields in the spread sheet are editable.
Ninja edit: I've made a slight modification to the spreadsheet, it was only calculating the quantity of the floor boards for 1 crate :-[
Revision 3; Uploaded on 30/03/2013 - Dividers Added :)
Please post pics of assembly or a few of the finished crate thnx
Would you do an article for the front page on it? take lots of pics and writes itself.
I've been planning on making a slightly modified version of this (//www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/how-make-beer-crate-12oz-beer-bottles-318788/), but stackable.
I'd be interested to see how yours turn out.
My bottles vary from 65mm diameter up to 75mm so for 24 bottles I used internal dimensions of 305x478.
I got some 119x14 skirting board so the moldings might look a bit funny?
1. Cut the timber as per the cut list.
2. Fix the blue boards to the red boards. I used ø3x25 screws but you can use nails or glue. Leave the top blue board down the thickness of the floor board (yellow). You need 2 of these per crate.
3. Stand your blue/red frames up and fix them together with the green boards. The green boards should be flush with the top and bottom of the red boards.
4. Turn the crate upside down and fix the floor boards (yellow). Leave 1mm clearance all round to make them easier to stack.
That's it! I've just tried it with empty bottles and they are a bit wobbly! Some dividers would be good. I might make some out of thick cardboard.

Could one of the mods let me know how to place the images in between the paragraphs please? :-[

Good job by the way [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
Looks great Garry, and a gold star for the excel spreadsheet!
@delzep, thanks for putting that together. From your post I've figured out how to get the images between the paragraphs using:
[img]http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/yabbfiles/Attachments/IMAGENAME.***[/img]
But the attachments all show up again at the end of the post, how did you hide them?
Cracking job, now I know what to do with spare skirting in the garage :)
Don't attach them using the feature on this forum. Upload your photos to an external site like www.imgur.com and copy and paste the url from there...makes things easier

Got it! Cheers [smiley=beer.gif]
Problem with using photo hosting sites is that sometimes they move things around. All the "site" links work for your folders but the old "externally accessable" links no longer work/exist.
Just a heads up thats all!
Hi there
Any chance you would post the speadsheet with the calculations?

Shanna, If you look at the original post (the first one in this thread) at the end of the post is the attatchment spread sheet!!
Beer_Crate.xls
Small screen on my phone and our eye sight combine to make me miss the icons for the file. Ta fire the heads up Will.
Shanna
Thanks Garry will be using your .xls in the future.
Been using a few of them (http://silvermarkconsult.com/images/300_FileBoxes.jpg)for my bottles. They hold 26 "Erdinger" style bottles and 18 standard wine bottles.
Here are a few ideas I found on the net.Might be helpful.

Those plywood boxes look tasty alright. They'd keep the light away from the bottles too. Might be a bit of a push for my woodworking skills though! I love birch plywood but it's very expensive >:(
I never tought of using archive boxes, I've got a few packs of those in the office. They'll do next time I'm stuck :)
I'd like to make a little 6-pack holder too but it won't look anything like the ones you posted. Function over form ;D
I tried out the crates last night with full bottles and I'm happy with them. It's nice to be able to lift up 24 full glass bottles without worrying about the arse falling out of the box!
Thats a crackin job Garry.
I like the idea of those dividers in the plywood crate, I wonder could you adapt your design.
I think they'd make things easier to move half full crates without botles goin flying everywhere.
I've succumbed to peer pressure :P and added a new tab to the spreadsheet for calculating dimensions for dividers.

1. I used some 5mm thick cardboard. Mark it out as per drawing on the dividers tab of the spreadsheet and cut with a craft knife.
2. Slot all the pieces together and put it into the crate.

I must say that they do make a big difference. The bottles are nice and tight in the crate and the glass ones aren't rattling off each other when you move the crate. 8-)
If anyone is e near the B&C anytime I could give you those cardboard dividers, we get a few boxes every week that have them. I'm sure other craft beer pubs would oblige as well.

Good thinking! I might try my local off-licence for some spares and build a few crates to suit them. Do 500ml bottles typically come in 24 no. or 20 no. per box?
All the German 500ml we stock come in boxes of 20
Garry's guide is now up (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/wiki/doku.php?id=diy_bottle_crate) on the Wiki.
Thanks again Garry for this!
Gary,
Well done, thats an excellent write up and "automation" as well.
Anyone who combines excel spread sheets with a table saw deserves maximum Kudos!!!
Another one for the handyman ::)

Just found this awesome post, but unfortunately the link to the spreadsheet is down.
If you could re-post the link that would be great, but if you don't have the file for whatever reason I'll give it a go with the info in the post and hope for the best.
Either way it's a great DIY design! :)
Hi Tomas, the speadsheet link doesn't appear to be working in the wiki article? But it does still work on the first post.
PM me your email if you still can't download it. I'll send it to you.

Thanks Garry, I actually tried the two links yesterday and they wouldn't open, but I've had to mess around with my routers firewall settings today because I've been having issues ever since I had to re-do my port forwarding & Long story short... I was able to download the spreadsheets there a few min's ago!
Cheers anyway, it's much appreciated! :D
