I was thinking of applying for the generalk certificate in brewing from IBD (the most basic one - there are diplomas and masters ones too)

anyone know of it? is it worth much to a brewery if you're looking for a job/is it respected?

The GCB is sort of the most basic qualification you can get which proves you know something about brewing, safety, and quality. There are brewers who do not have any qualifications, not even the GCB so it certainly is possible to get by without it. But there are increasing numbers of brewers getting them in Ireland as we've run a few GCB prep courses over the past year. How easy or difficult the exam is really depends on your academic fortitude. If you don't study, you won't pass. The pass rates we have seen are a bit lower than expected, and are generally lower in Ireland than in the UK for some reason. You really have to study the material provided and not just assume you can get by on your pre-existing brewing knowledge.

There will be another course run in Cork December 9-13th which will prepare you for the GCB exam (as usual this is free to jobseekers). Contact the skillnet to express your interest in the course.
