So, My cider press project is under way!

I need to seal/finish Oak with a FG oiled finish:

I know McQuillans sell a FG oil but me is Welsh so I have a few questions:

1. Is Linseed oil classed as FG?

2. I know Olive oil is FG but would there be a flavour problem

3. @CH: Real beeswax is FG (we eat it) but what about the stuff they sell as "Beeswax" for furniture manufacture/restoration - would "Beeswax" candles be better

4. Now we get into "Teak Oil", "Tung Oil", "Danish Oil"

5. What about 2 pack polyurethane resins etc FG when cured?

6. What about Ronseal - "does what it says on the tin"! BTW: The tin does NOT say "DONT EAT ME"

Need to know before my lovley oak soaks up a load of AJ!

I HTF that Evostick Resin W Exterior is FG!!

Linseed oil  on all that doesn't come in contact with the juice, do you not just leave it natural?

Its mainly the press plate itself that will get soaked in juice. Its just to stop the worst of the absorbtion so that when I put the stuff away for 11 months and forget about it I come back to mould free wood.

I guess though that the amount of Tannins in the oak will have a anti-microbial effect.

Also an oiled finish shoes off the timber well.

I believe linseed is edible though ( added to cakes 'n things )

Also linseed has a lovely smell!

What would any oil transfer do the the Cider Fermentation process? Other than head retention!:P

I would leave natural and was and dry thoroughly before storage! The oak will only get better with age!

Frequent Sequence

Flax seed oil is the name for refined (food grade) linseed oil.
Don't use straight linseed as it has drying chems which are nasty. The problem with flax is it can go off.
Bees wax would be a good choice you can melt it in a little oil to make it more workable.
The cheapest is probably pure mineral oil.
Wallnut oil would be a great choice if you give it time to dry because it wont go rancid.

Frequent Sequence

The pros use mainly walnut oil, mineral oil or bees wax. All food grade finishes will need to be reapplied as they aren't as tough as chemical seals.

I think flaxseed oil is a laxative so that could make for some interesting cider   :D

I have some beeswax if you want it Mr D, very fresh, you may have to move a few bees out of your way first  ;D
