Anyone used this before? Should it look like this?
it's hard to tell but it does look funky.
Is this from HBC?
Yep from HBC.
I'm no expert (no shit says you) but to me it looks like the yeasties have separated from their carrier medium ? Possibly due to radical temperature fluctuations if i had to guess ::)
I gave it a good shake up and put it back in the fridge....after a while its ended up all clumpy again

Two options i can see 1) Bring it back to HBC for a replacement, 2) Do up a one gallon batch and chuck the lot in to see if it will kick off, if it doesn't you have only lost a gallon, if it does you have more yeasties to brew with, also doing this would tell you if it was funky or not ?
I have plenty of Notty so I'll brew up a batch, open the vial and if it stinks I'll use the Notty instead
Get HBC to check their stock and send out a replacement.
They should be thanking you for not going to Joe Duffy ;)
I used this for a mild recently and it looked very clumpy, and even weirder in the fermenter (brown strands in the krausen!) but it was absolutely fine.
It's supposed to be very flocculent - some other English ale yeasts (maybe WLP013?) are prone to clumping as well.
Is this what you're suggesting for the barrel?

?
john is not talking to you. :)he is talking to mr Happy. ;)
Sorry, I thought mr h was pushing dodgy yeast our way. >:D
Hi Delzep,
I just emailed your yeast picture to white labs, see response below:
Hi Shane,
That strain is VERY flocculant and does tend to stick together in clumps like that. I forwarded the pic to our lab director (the resident yeast pro) and she said it looks fine. I hope you can reassure your customer to use it and the fermentation will speak for itself! :)
Hope that gives ya piece of mind.
Shane
Great stuff, thanks for your help. Look forward to using it now!

Yep, it's also what I used for the beer that seems to have gotten a silver medal on Saturday as well.
What beer are you planning with this yeast. :)
Probably a mild. I'll wash it and reuse for something a bit later too

Wow, Well done Shane and Whitelabs!
That was some quick response!
Quick update here, my Yorky looked the same and when i opened it, it fizzed all over the place and smelled FUNK-EE sour funky like so ditched it unfortunately, think this ended up also happening with Delzep?
Yep, smell like a delicious gueuze which unfortunately it shouldn't do. Got in contact with White Labs so see what they say
Have you seen this (http://www.jstrack.org/brewing/wlp037p.html)?
Nice find. My vial smelled a lot more like a "standard" Belgian yeast smell.....definately sour Belgian
See what White Labs say :)
I'd a beer brewed with this dinged in the nationals as infected. It seems to have been because it had a lot of cloves going on.There was also a musty / earthy thing but I'm doing a rebrew because I think that was due to thamount of treacle I used in the recipe. As per garry's link, if you look at the chat on HBT this can throw a lot of cloves if fermented cool.
I'd drink / brew sours and brett so I'd know if that's what I had and it definitely wasn't, so maybe it's a different problem to you, but I thought I'd throw it out as a data point.
I have 3 batches of beer on at the mo with this.
2 x Batches of October Ale (Barrel contributors)
1 small batch Yorkshire ESB.
Did your yeast smell like a geuze when you opened it though John?
I didn't spend much time with my nose over it tbh.
The Vial I had was pretty active so fresh.
I must do some taste tests on the beers I've on.
my vial had a bit of a sour smell from it, but the beer itself doesn't smell or taste in any way like geuze.
Actually, I made a starter and there was a nose off it, but I believe this is normal.
Chugged like a train once pitched.
it never stops chugging...
Sourdough is how I'd describe the smell of the vial
Still no word from White Labs.
I got a similar one recently and HBC changed it immediately when I contacted them.
I guessed that theywo uld but as it's a seasonal they most likely won't have it anymore
Still no word from White Labs
WL finally got back to me...said it should be fine ::)
@Eoin, how did the fresher one compare to the original?

The new one line looked just like I expected.
