Title: 36 Gallon Whiskey Casks
Post by: CARA on March 22, 2013, 02:02:28 PM
Would there be any interest in a Bushmills Whiskey Cask group buy? Would just like to survey numbers to figure out logistics and explore a group discount. At the minute they are around the 40 sterling mark per cask. Location is NW N. Ireland so we would need to arrange delivery either to a central pick up location or delivery to local brew clubs etc. The casks will be guaranteed freshly emptied (1 week or less)

Sounds good declan. Whats the plan?

Do you envisage that perhaps each regional club may want to buy their own cask and the members individually brew a batch to fill it?

I think the core membership in the south dublin club, may be a little small at the moment, but we could possibly join forces with another club - possibly north wickla (when they form) to fill one.

As was discussed the other night, you mean the "Continuity" South Dublin Brewers!?

@jimmym Yeah that would be the plan, but as tube says at the price a few people might want to try private projects also.

1. Liffey Brewers
2. Capital Brewers
3. CARA

Yeah I suppose - the price is really a bit rediculous isnt it :)
Delivery will bring it up slightly -
I'll go over Conor's head and say we'll take one for South Dublin. I can store it for a time if I need to.

jesus lad, I've spent my whole life avoiding responsibility! don't give me any at this stage of my life!  ;) :)

Sounds like a great idea. I've no trouble contributing a few gallons to the barrel. I'd just have nowhere to store it myself.

Ill offer storage for the Capital unless anyone with better facilities volunteers (I'm moving house on Monday  :) :) )

I can store it at least til it needs to be filled - and probably afterwards too.

Now i think about it 36 gallons isnt that much - we should have no probs filling it.

Doesn't sound much of a deal at £40 per 36 gallon.
First hit from google gives £69 for a 56 gallon - http://www.kilgraney.com/KFoakbarrels.htm
Is it going to be cheaper than £40 for a bulk buy?

Declan whats the dimensions of these things?
Title: Re: 36 Gallon Whiskey Casks
Post by: Will_D on March 23, 2013, 11:22:09 AM
Somebody asked about the dimensions on the regional threads so I will respond on the master thread:

Barrels do tend to vary in shape - depends on the cooperage. Couldn't find any refs to an actual size. So here goes:

A 35 gallon is probably a 36 (standard size and is called a Barrel)

This is contains 163 litres.

Approximating the barrel to a cylinder and assuming a 2 to 1 aspect ratio the cylinder would be:

470 x 940 mm

Should easily fit through a door way.

Main problem is the weight when full approx 200 Kgs!
When its full it will be a bugger to move.

Also when getting the barrels can we get some stillages?

These are nothing less than the curved wooden resting/stacking things that allow barrels to be stored horizontally when filling and when full.

They can be made out of 3*2" timber and a jig-saw but if we can get them free so much the better.

We need one for every barrel and probably a pallet as well to move them. Who has a pallet truck?

They're based in Nottingham for a start and I very much doubt that they will have been freshly emptied.
I said £40 as a ball park. The price will differ when we've firmed up numbers.

@Will_D I rang him back yesterday to enquire about getting them palleted up etc. but he won't be available until Monday morning so expect an update then.

Cheapest is not always best for what we want. You may be sold an ex-wine barrel that has lain around for a few years and stinks of vinegar or worse!.

If we get fresh from Bushmills then its worth paying that little bit extra!

They also need to be wet. If a barrel dries out then its a bugger to get tight again!

No problem for a planter or litter bin but not for a whiskey flavoured maturing barrel.

The last thing you would want to do is steep it in water to re-swell the staves or worst of all soak it in sanitiser.

As soon as I get mine, it will be inspected, sniffed, tested for wetness and if needed refreshed with a bottle of Bushmills!

Hi there,

If your talking about having to use a pallet and truck to move this thing then your going to talking awkward work. Assuming a 36 gallon (imperial size) where a gallon of water weighs 10 pounds approx. Then add in the weight of the barrel assume another 50 pounds as wet oak planking will be heavy (could be more) . Approx dead weight of the barrel filled is 410 pounds.
, this  is approx 29 stone or 185 kg.

Not sure you want to try moving that heavy around very far. Something of that shape and weight on a pallet could easily take a tumble.  A hand truck is manageable but you would want a fairly flat surface made of something hard like concrete to allow you manoeuvre.  I would suspect that putting the barrel empty in the corner of a shed that is dry and not going to be disturbed would be the best option and bring the beer to the barrel :-) Other thing to think of one is how to make a large bore siphon as a 10 mm tube will take all day to empty.  Probably want something like a 50 mm tube

Shanna

Ps: Capital brewers I have a pair of sheds that could store a single barrel if you have not found somewhere for it yet.

Quotehmmm...I'd be more interested in a port or wine cask.

Well thats easy!

Buy a new oak barrel. Make red wine from a kit or port (see my "Vintage Port Quickly" recipe) and mature in the barrels for a few batches. You get to drink the Wine or Port and then have a barrel you know the provenance of and what its been used for.

New 5 or 10 gallon oak barrels are not expensive.

Filling one with 10 gallons of whiskey is expensive!

@ciderhead They're based just outside Derry City, Bushmills themselves won't sell their old casks to the general public. Also with regards the risk of contamination on such a large and dedicated brew, I think it's a chance we'll take. It's an experiment, granted a pretty epic one, but an experiment none the less.

@JimmyM I'm moving house this week and off to England the week after so how does Tuesday 9th or Wednesday 10th suit? I'm open to other available dates though just has to be after then realistically.

Just to help out Declan:

We are going to have to pay up soon so we can move quickly. Its comming into summer and the Fe****g gardners are turning these into F******G Planter for Gods sake!

In order to progress you need to update this list with the name of the responsible person who will pay for the cask and ALSO receive it from Joc the delivery man.

Its then up to the group or individual to move the cask around to where its destined.

It was indeed a great trip to North West, big thanks to the brains and the muscle!
I haven't had a more informative 8 hour car journey. Silicone sheets and chunks of pineapple will never be viewed in the same light again.
We met our man in Drumahoe about an hour after he had received a fresh batch of barrels and upon inspection (as you can see from the photos) we weren't disappointed. He even wasted some to prove a point which nearly caused the three of us to pounce on him!
We've been guaranteed freshly emptied, wet casks, each with around a pintish of whiskey in, new bungs and a template for the base chocks.
The templates will be available on loan to each participating party so they can make up their stillage.
Price, including delivery to the agreed drop off points or clubs comes in at 50 euro per barrel.
We would like all interested clubs/persons to reconfirm their interest online lodge the money in the club bank account by Tuesday 16th at 4pm please.
Myself and The Artist Formerly Known as Ciderhead shall be travelling up to the collect the load on Tuesday 23rd April.

I'd like to also point out that we have room for only 2 more casks.

Irish Goat has just come up with a great suggestion:

Rather than post it around the local groups I will repleat here for all to see:

"Since I'm only extract I can only really offer cash. Obv can pay for ingredients too if we do a group brew."

I replied:

Agreeing to split the costs like this is a great way to "Buy into" the cask.

However its really up to the group: If for example 7 AGs were done and 1 good kit or extract of the same style was used who would notice?

As we know from the comp a lot of the kits/Extracts were better than some AGs!

After all even using identical ingredients (Malts, Hops, Yeast) all sourced from one bulk supply, ye would still get slightly different beers.

More likely: Same recipe but "interpreted" as to whats in the stores at home - even if all same they will be different ages so again different beers.

Some goups were even thinking about blending a couple of different recipes??

As I said its up to you.

Also if the non-brewers (who help pay for the ingredients) want to help out on the brew days then "way to go"

So even if you can't manage to brew yourself you could still "buy into" a group brew.

Does this help to re-kindle some interest. Remember these cask may not be available again for another year or so!!

Not Whiskey Barrels.

If you google "oak barrels for sale" you will find a few places in the UK that sell brandnew oak barrels starting from a pin (4.5 gallons all the way up. They are not that expensive!

QuoteProbably not too long. No more than a week or two. But I'm just guessing.

As long as they are kept wet and air tight they should last quite a while. I would first check they are wet and then tape over the bug with gaffer tape and roll them about every other day or so.

After all as soon as we get them we have to brew the beers which will take a week or two. We could use them for secondary which would be quicker. Problem is that given their size temperature control may be a problem. If its a hot summer then may have to resort to evapoative cooling:

Put wet towels over the casks and keep moist with water!

Absolutely. Extract shouldn't be a problem as long as the beer tastes good at the end of the day.
QuoteAny recipe can be translated to extract, so extract brewers shouldn't feel this is beyond them, as it's not.

out of curiosity...... how long can  you wait between getting the Barrel and ageing in it ?

I presume the idea is primary ferment in your own vessels and then (a)  transfer for secondary into the barrel
Or
(b) Secondary for a week or two

and then Age in Barrell
right ?

Either way I guess you would be looking at 1 - 3 weeks before throwing it into the Barrell ?
So.... I guess my question is : When should your brew day be scheduled ?
(does this make sense - wondering how long you can wait between between pick up and   brew day beffore the barrel drys out or stops being fresh ? )

its early - my head hasn't woken up yet -

This is soundinding more like a fairy story:

"Once upon a time there was a cask of beer, and the brewer of said cask was about to take it to market when he went for a P*ss behind the bushes.

Just as he was about to water a dandelion:

Poof:  Up popped the Dandelion Fairy (@beertourist: See the wikki for the ref!).

"Please spare my little sisters!" said the Fairy!

"Whats in it for me said the brewer"??

Said the Fairy: "An ever expanding cask of beer - the more you measure it or the more you fill it the bigger it gets!"

"F**kit said the brewer Give me two"
