Not true. Always keep them full of drink or just water with a bit of bisulphite in.

To clean, throw in a length of brass chain swirl, drain, rinse, repeat.

This does NOT work for 36 gallon barrels!!
Remember: The Nationals are just round the corner - time to get brewing

Solves that so.... 

I think I'm allergic to bisulphite though

You can rinse out the bisulphite just before you fill it!!

Is this idea dead in the water or what? Has anybody looked into it any further?

Looks like it's dead. However, we got few empty whiskey barrels :P
