Maroon colour is cause first time grinding roasted barley with the new mill and it pretty much ended up as dust. I used 100grs of 1350 EBC roasted barley. Beer smith said it was fine colour wise but as always I put it down to a mistake. I used a manual scales to measure out the barley and it was probably not calibrated properly. My digital scales keeps going on the blink.

Hmm, yeah you have to watch roasted barley, or you end up with a brown porter.

I've learned to take BeerSmith's colour predictions with a pinch of salt - especially the graphic up in the top right corner. It's next to useless.

I'm open to correction on this, but I think the roasted barley just comes out like that when it's ground. It's pretty brittle stuff, though I'm not sure how it compares to other specialty malts in terms of moisture content. So I don't think the crush is the problem there. Especially if your other grains were fine. 100g is a fair amount of RB to put in an Irish Red. I use 60g in mine (along with a fair portion of crystal) and it comes out as red as anything. The only thing is to chalk it down to experience and adjust the RB in your next attempt. It's great to dial in recipes like this. Most of the beers I've done in 2013 have been re-brews, and it's been a great learning experience - learning about the ingredients themselves and how they affect a beer.

In any case, I'm sure it will taste just fine. My first attempt at an Irish Red came out too dark also, so I just called it a "Ruby Porter", like Whitewater's Clotworthy Dobbin.

Checked the gravity of the irish ale today and its fine. I could also see that the colour while dark is at least still red. Know what you mean about re brews have two planned for stout and IPA
