Hi All,

I just joined after I had a mishap brewing an American IPA over the weekend (my first  non-kit brew)...I had a lot of hops to clean up after the siphon clogged and blew off the bung in the hotpress! At least the hotpress has a nice hoppy aroma now  .

Any tips on future batches? I reckon I filled up the demijohn a little too much and the dry hopping after fermentation may have caused problems. They're the only ideas I have so far anyway...

By siphon I presume you mean the airlock, right?
You could use a larger fermentation vessel, or weigh the hops down in a bag, or use hop pellets (they'll break up finer than leaf)

I had a siphon attached to the bung so that the CO2 could escape freely for the fist few days. I put the other end into a glass of sanitiser solution. This may be completely wrong, I was following the True Batch Brewery method! I have 2 demijohns (1 gallon) so maybe if I use both of them? Is there a problem if there is a big airspace in your vessel?
