How does it look and smell?
Sent from my U9200 using Tapatalk 2
Looks normal. Couldn't upload pic. No smell I can get..
Just finished mine, and here is the results:
20l at 1.070 - little lower than expected but I've left it as is :(
we can keep this going to see how quantities stack up
So the top of mine looks like a gremlin reproducing....

That's some pretty niche porn you're into...

Haha! I tried to upload a pic but couldn't. Probably the porn filter kicking in..
Bad quality through plastic but maybe can make out the bubbles..
Almost done here... 1.071 Pow! 8)
Made a few extra litres to compare against the barrel aged stuff. It was a mighty full hopper and I maxed out my mash tun.
Some snaps of the brew day so far.
Just realised I should have got 1.075. Feck! :(
I think once all have brewed and the fill list with quantity is posted, we can look at getting a date set. My intention is for all to brew and ferment in a stable condition. After a couple of weeks we all should of brewed and be ready to organise for me to empty barrel, rinse and collect everyone's beer for transfer into barrel.
The smell from the fermenter is delicious. Temptation may get the better of me ;D
Mine was ok. Must be down to you fine milling. You did use wheat MALT didn't you?
Quote from: Tube on March 19, 2014, 12:54:45 PM
Very gummy mash as I milled some of it twice by accident (don't ask). Wort doesn't want to come out!
My run off was ok, but it was hard to clean mashtun afterwards. Very sticky.
Just to clarify...the bag of malt I made up had all the malts except the Pale/Pilsener and the Munich.
With the exception of mcgrath who didn't need all malts so he got a 'special' customised bag. :)
I just mashed what I got, thought it was the smallest mash ever! ::)
Only joking :P
Funny guys! ::)

I thought I'd never get rid of that aromatic malt.. :-)
Did 26L yesterday.. Hit the gravity on the nose.. I now know why I don't use pellets.. Need to get sowing before using them again

Should we have a contingency in case we're short on this one too?
I I get more ingredients I can get close to 60l and freeze the excess......
In fact I was thinking of doing another lambic brew and freezing that too for future top-ups.
I've no problem doing another batch
Are we talking about contingency in volumes or individuals ability to brew on schedule? I would have thought the volume of the Oud Bruin barrel was not a risk since we already used it for our shitey stout! :P

I think Contingency in volumes.
I am planning my brew next weekend as I have Friday until Wednesday off.
I won't be doing any heavy lifting for the first few days, but I think I can be brewing by Monday. I hope at least.
What's volume of the barrel in question?
Do we really need to allow a 10% contingency for already fermented beer being lost in transit?
Not in transit, but in ullage over time and as tubs says it's our ability to count that needs a check.

Ok lads. How does Sat 12 look for organizing the pickup of beer? I'm working that night so my plan would be to pickup from a central point and then in the morning I will transfer to the barrel.
Anybody that hasn't brewed yet needs to get it on soon.
Once in the barrel I'll post up the barrel fill level status.
Sounds good.
I was misjudged on munich malt when it came time to brew so mine is a little low. Doubt it will impact the overall beer much.
Just took a whiff of the FV and it smells great.

Brewed and pitched on 23 marsh and have just checked. It is still bubbling away with a bubble every 8 seconds. :)
I'll be transferring mine tomorrow and getting another batch on for personal consumption and making kriek.
Really! Mine was quiet after 2weeks. At this rate we'll need a bubbler for the barrel.
Out of curiosity, what is the current gravity reading?

Dunno, I don't have a turkey baster, even a dodgy one.
Do you have an autosyphon? You can take the tube out and use the part with the non return valve like a wine thief by shaking it.

Hey!!! Leave my name out if this :P
The main ferment will be done and the critters will be working away. Activity will also be the co2 coming out of solution and this can be a while after initial fermentation.
I've got a bung with an airlock ready for when I transfer to barrel.

Nope the bags from Mark were specialist only, I phoned him the other day to check. I had 3kg of Munich so told him I was 600 short.... It appears we're a little shorter again.....??

I did not put any base malt in the bags guys. I'd be surprised if you didn't add munich based on your OG Shane.

Swiss cheese brain. Can't remember anything other than I brewed it, as I have the proof sitting in a carboy in the kitchen.

So are any of you boys doing another Oud Bruin and using the yeast cake? Be a shame to waste it!
Yep thats my plan...just have to sacrifice another fermenter to the sour gods
Quote from: lordstilton on April 06, 2014, 07:51:38 PM

are you not going to just reuse the current fermenter? That's my plan anyway.
How you going to transfer to Dodge? You going to have a dedicated sour corny?
A cornie is SS so no need to dedicate it. You might want to change the O-rings though. I've reused and not even changed the o-rings without a problem.
Grand job.
Quote from: Tube on April 06, 2014, 10:40:03 PM
Domestos gets rid of everything anyway. If it can make your jax shine, just imagine how clean your cornies will be.
I've my OB in glass, and for tranfer to dodge's I'll stick it in a corny. But Domestos* will be used liberally afterwards.
* Not be actual Domestos. Cheaper equivalent from Lidl may be used
Domestos has a surfactant which makes it pretty bad for this type of stuff as it makes it it harder to take off, cheaper thin bleach as you reference is a much better alternative, that said a quick wash with star san post bleaching removes all traces of chlorine smells.
Thought I read bleach can cause damage to stainless. Maybe I'm wrong?
I wash mine with oxi and rinse with water. Then I give it a rinse with starsan.
Anyone got some spare Munich? I can replace it next week. It's all I'm shy for doing another batch
Lars just got in touch to say he can sort me out.. I have everything else.. I can help you out if needed.. I'm in work tonight and tomorrow night so can drop around
So do you need any specialties?
I'll do you up a bag today or tomorrow so
Grand so.. It would be as handy to pick it up from you
Maybe we should organise an informal oud bruin competition for September meet up?

Initial taste Mark? I'm making my second batch today.
Tastes fine for something just out of fermenter. No off flavours. Can get the lactic acid but not overly pronounced. Hopefully will develop further with some more time and warmer weather.
I've got 5L extra that won't go in the barrel. Will be interesting to compare later.
What recipe did you follow for your second one? I've another Oud Bruin in using the same culture but different recipe.

Same one Mark.. I ran out of special B.. So had to sub it with dark crystal.
I entered the correct culture on beersmith and it predicted 1.016 as OG. My OG was a few points low in the first place.
Rogers original recipe had FG as ~4 plato (~1.016) from memory.
Just under 19 L gone into the gerry can. My FG was 1 point off marks. Got another 20 L gone onto the trub.

What temp are you guys going to leave the barrel at home the bugs go in?
Right. I have my Flanders red sitting about 2 months now at about 18-20. First taste is no sourness only brett. I hooked up a emp controller and brew belt and have it sitting around 25 now. I pitched a fresh tube of lacto as well. Had Belgian sour mix in already but had no signs of sour. Anyway the increase in temp has kicked it off again. Will report back in a few months.
If where you plan on stoping has power an electric blanket could be an option. Barrel sized brew belt.
