Does it need to be crushed?

If its a whole grain crush it. If its been rolled or processed in a way that the starch is exposed then don't. I've always got it as a whole grain so I've crushed it without any problems. One thing to note is wheat is a smaller grain than barley so you might want to crush it separately with a finer setting on your mill

Cheers lads.

Now what is the best way to crush small amounts of grain without a mill? I stupidly ordered non-crushed a little while ago and I want to use it now. Have some brown malt too.

In a bag with a rolling pin or something hard to hit it with. Once the shell is split it will be fine.

yabba-dabba-dooooooo!

i can't remember what forums i read it on , but someone was dead serious saying that's how he crushes his speciality grains for steeping. He was probably trolling, but held strong and didn't back down from it.  ;D
