Had a rodenbach grandcru which made me real excited for my clone. Just finishing off an Orval.... Not much of a fan.

What clone did you try?

Just got this Jeff Sparrow recipe on last month so hoping to have something ready for Xmas.

BYO - Flanders Red (https://byo.com/grains/item/655-flanders-red-ale)

Sorry Sub didn't see this. I brewed jamil zainasheff's clone. I'm fermenting it in a plastic bucket for 6 months like he recommended, speed up the souring process.

Which offie is this? I should be down tomorrow.
Sorry I'm only getting back to you now. It's Gill's beside the Drift Inn. The father in law got me a rake of them a few weeks back when they were 4 for a tenner. They're on the go for 3 quid each now ibelieve.

Had the Brown Paper Bag Black Coffee IPA last night. Wasn't great, way too roasty and too much coffee. No idea why they're calling it a black IPA, nothing IPAish about it.

had a long day at work and decided to splash on a fancy beer.
Cobra king caught my eye , flashing awards and promises of a 'superbly smooth, double fermented superior beer'
tastes like rice crispies and smells like cornflakes. pale and clear. a head like piss-foam in a toilet bowl (doesn't last as long though). 7.5% abv with a strange sweet country wine fruitiness to it.
At €6.99 for a 750ml bottle I won't be buying another. ever.

Is double fermented like double hopped? - everything's better if you double it.

I tried the common recently - not sure what I was expecting (never had that style of beer before) but it was basically just lager.

Actually I tell a lie - I've have had WW's Kentucky Common, which is completely different but was also a bit disappointing.

Down in the big smoke for the weekend and went to devenneys rathmines for the first time. Great offie but dangerous cus only half the beers have prices marked!  :)

Had a can of beavertown smoked porter. Lightly smoked but delicious.

Opened a bottle of St. Mel's spring bock. Really dissapointed - weird TCP taste. Maybe just an off bottle.

Next up: Schneider weisse tap 5!

Had a Kinnegar Black Bucket tonight. The stuff's like golddust. Gorgeous big beer though.
Also had an O'Cleirigh's Virginja  PA. I had a draught taster of this at the Sheridan's food festival amd it was lovely and aromatic. Opened a bottle tonight and it's a different beast, fairly bitter. I like their tagline 'take her handy and drink responsibly' though, pure Cavan hey!

Been drinking Flying Dog Dogtberfest, lovely and malty. Gonna have to stick a faux Marzen on the to brew list.

Just opened my 2nd porter for the for the first time. It's the recipe from Brewing Classic Styles. Way better than my last. That took about 3 months to get decent. This is already tasting nice and it hasn't even carbed properly yet. I've high hopes for this now.

Hoppy beer is fragile. 2 weeks ago I bought 6 Beer Camp Hoppy Lever from SN. I ended up with one left over, brought it to a bbq last week and didn't drink it, opened it tonight and its a totally different beer. I could smell it immediately, the hops are gone it tastes and smells oxidised. Awful shame, it's a fantastic beer when it's still fresh (as american beer in Ireland can be).

Bottle of Hilden Halt . 6.1% Irish red ale .
A nice beer given the blake weather here today . it`s definitely a sweet malty beer ,so if that`s not your thing at least try one . but could see it`s sweetness beginning to grate after a pint or two .I used to eat malt out of the jar with a spoon as a kid ,ssoooo prob just for weirdos like me who really like malt lol but aye it`s a decent beer if that`s yer thing .

wee blub from their site .
"A premium, traditional Irish red ale. Hilden Halt has a malty, mild hop flavour and medium bitterness. This special reserve is named after the local train stop, which used to service the old Barbour linen mill behind Hilden House. At a robust strength of 6.1% ABV, Hilden Halt is our strongest ale so be careful not to get derailed."
Hops:    Goldings, Challenger and Saaz
ABV:    6.1%

In a due sense of fairness i also tried their belfast blonde 4.3% .
this did not envoke childhood memories of scabbed knees and s-buckle belts lol . it`s fine but maybe it was not such a great idea drinking it after the Halt . it tasted like a run of the mill beer somebody chucked a load of hops at . and the hops did add a lot to the beer ,I`m just not so sure there`s much to back them up .glad i tried it but dont think it`s one id want more than a bottle or two of.

wee blurb for the belfast blonde .
"We have now merged our College Green beers into the Hilden family. Meet the new look Belfast Blonde! New look but the same great beer. A light, crisp tasting pale beer with a pleasant and distinct hop character lingering at the end. Using "Saaz" and "Hersbrucker" hops from the Czech Republic and Germany."
Hops:    Hersbrucker, Styrian Goldings and Late Addition of Saaz hops
ABV:    4.3%

That looks great anyway Molc. I know widmer brow are t necessarily craft but there stuff has always been good when I've had it.

I'm having a few bottles of Little Sumpin Sumpin which is one of my new favourites. Had a few SN hoppy lagers on tap earlier which I thinks aged out now and while it was ok it's nowhere near as good as the bottles I had a few months ago when the hops were really prominent.

Love this stuff. Had their Heady Hills flanders red a while back, jesus but it was tasty!
Was in Buncrana recently, just across the lough from Kinnegar and the pub that's usually fairly well stocked with their stuff was dry. I wonder is there a supply and demand thing going on?

I can see why it's so popular, the balance between the super bitterness, danky/piney hop flavours and the lightness is different to any other IPA/DIPA ive had. Not in another world to the best irish beers though.

Defo. Ive been lucky enough to have it a handful of times. Pliny is top drawer. Some tasty skills to brew a dipa as delicate as that, day in day out. Im sure a lot of similar ipas are just that, similar - coz they copied a masterful beer & brewer. No shame in it. If it aint broke etc

Mescan Blonde and Stout.
Swagman's Shtuff.
White Hag's Imperial Sour Red, Session IPA and Oatmeal Stout.
Clew Bay's red ale.
Reel Deal's Blonde and Pale Ale
Independent's Blonde amd Pale Ale.
I think that's it, might have forgotten one or two......every pub over here has a good craft option, mighty!

I'm not having anything at the moment (more's the pity) but one beer I've been delighted with recently is Aldi's new seasonal O'Shea's dry hopped amber ale. It really is very very nice with a decent hop bang. At €1.89 it would be foolish not to - and of course you can reuse the bottles for homebrew! The spiced winter ale (also an O'Shea's seasonal) was shite though....

Really lovely blend of sour, salty and sweet. First impressions is salt and lemon and then the sourness comes through. Nice crisp malty grain finish just at the end brings it all together.

How?

Lets say the batch of beer is clean (easily tested - I am always available for this) but there is a slight problem with some cans or the equipment. A "will become infected" can/cans are produced. The infection is not detectable at the end of the line, its only after the cans are stored (at maybe incorrect temperatures ) that a detectable infection develops.

That is why its important to tell the people!

Heady Topper was decent, with good fresh fruity flavours, and I know the yeast is important in this beer, but can't help feeling that it also gets in the way of the taste. Was careful pouring the can, but still quite a haze. I've heard that it should be drunk straight from the can, but not sure about that.

I think I actually preferred the Jai Alai, as the yeast didn't seem to get in the way, and the flavour was lovely and fresh, although the can did advise to pour carefully.

What I did like about these two beers was the lack of crystal or any of those other sweet darkish malts that ruin most double IPA's for me.

That's what they say, but why would they purposely brew a hazey beer? Maybe it's due to them trying to get it to market asap, and aren't filtering etc, which I understand and appreciate, but still not sure what benefit the haze brings. I doubt they would be saying to drink it striaght from the can, if it wasn't so hazy.

It's their 'thing'. It's unfiltered and unpasteurised. There have been some hazy IPA's out Stateside recently due to TH. I don't get it myself!

The yeast they use is a low flocculator, apparently it's an English strain, though other people suspect it could have Belgian origins as some of the characteristics it produces at different ferm temps.

Had a couple of local seasonals over the weekend, Wicklow Wolfs A Beer Named Rwanda (coffee brown ale) and OBrothers Joe (coffee porter). Both were really great beers. I preffered the Obrother though because it was just perfectly balanced IMO. Not too coffee-ey, not too roasty and not too bitter but all were present and enjoyable.

Single Hop - It was OK, but I thought the Hop was a tad menthol.

I tried that last week, did not like it much. I have the Galaxy one this week so at least I'll know now if its the beer or the hop. I'm guessing it was more the hop.

Having an 8 degrees snoweater red ipa, I love red ipas since I was in San Diego the year before last, so it's nice to get the style in Ireland. I also noticed that 8 degrees now show the malt hops and ibus on the bottle, always a positive in my opinion.

I thought I'd pick up a sour. Wild Beer Co Zintuki (blended with Ninkasi) It's got a nice zing to it. It's quite dry and at 7.3% it's a pleasure to drink. Uses yeast and bacteria from an orchard in Somerset, blended with Ninsaki and a small amount of apple juice. Sour but not nuclear!

I read that the Carafe doesnt make it bitter but tbh I got some astringency and bitterness from this.  Was looking forward to but but surprised (and  unusually for 8 degrees for me) didnt really enjoy this as much as the rest of theirs. The Black in their Vic Secret on the other hand was lovely.

Galway Bay - The Eternalist. Jammy sour. Not overly sour and a nice sweet raspberry tartness to it. Murky purple brown look to it. If there was such a thing as a session sour, it's this.

Torc Brewing IPA. This is made with European hops which makes it taste a bit different to the IPAs that I'm used to. It has big, bold flavours and fair play to them for that but it's not really for me. Also the €4.79 price tag is a major turnoff for me.

There are two streams,  a supervalu watered down version and one that I tasted at the launch in Nov. by Kevin and Kieran, a former Homebrewer on here.
They are poles apart unfortunately, and I would agree with you but don't write off just yet interesting stuff coming down the track.

I found a few dark lagers over in Mexico that hit the spot. Cant for the life of me remember the names of them. Nice rich Vienna style lagers. Nice when it for dark but in the 38+ day heat the Mojito or margarita in the pool hit the spot for me.

8 Degrees Barleywine 330ml €4.30 in Martins of Clontarf.

First impressions on the nose are boozy fruit and rum/raisin notes.

On tasting, toffee-sweet with caramel, tannins.

Finish, caramel turns bitter and has a really dry astringent aftertaste.

In conclusion, I'd have to say that I really didn't like this one, the finish being so bitter and drying, it really clashed with the sweetness of the style.

Went to have a pint and get my growler filled.  Met a mate doing the same and both drank more than a fill so didn't bother.  Only thing I can take from it is that I still think Victory don't make good beer and GB do.  Now at home having a Punkish homebrew.  It's way darker than punk but its so hoppy it's impossible to find the flaws. And it's definitely not brewed as I hoped.

There was a slight sourness, hard to get with all the hops, but the main thing that gave it away was the mouthfeel, thick and syrupy ,and when shaking the glass it moves like a syrup, my guess is pediococcus/ lactic bacteria.

Email them, with batch number, I'm sure they will want to know and tell us how you get on.
I did it a couple of years ago and was dismissed initially by email until I rocked up at the door explained who I was and why I knew there was a problem with the product, I walked them through the problem by making them drink it which they fully accepted, it was just one batch from high ferment temps.
As a brewer forgetting the negative publicity I'd want to know if my beer wasn't right for public consumption so I could address what problem was.

A case in my own industry where water bottles were full of something they shouldn't have been was simply down to stacked bottles outside sitting on wet cardboard dividing layers, bugs got in and had a field day and made lots of folks very ill. Fillers didn't notice as cardboard had dried.

My point is usually it's pretty simple issue to resolve and better to be aware of the problem and deal with it than have folks think it's supposed to taste like that or worse make them sick

we need stuff like that in the members area as its verging on commercial slander saying a breweries beer tastes like "pish" have tasted a lot of sub par irish micro stuff recently but its bottling related as one bottle ok and next not :(
Be nice to educate members who weren't bjcp judges to know what to look out for fault wise and whats good and bad out there

Definitely agree on the bottling issue. The move to cans is improving a lot of local stuff and getting the stuff on tap has always been massively different.

If certain breweries occasionally sell 'pishy' beer due to their own bottling process, then any bad press is their own fault.
I'm all for supporting consistently great Irish beer and there's plenty of it out there, but if I have a bad experience with a brewery's product I'll avoid it in the future and not recommend it to others.
I'm not BJCP trained, but I can tell if a beer's oxydised, infected, imbalanced, etc. It doesn't really matter if people use the correct terminology for what is for all intents and purposes a 'pishy beer' that they spent good money on, and often too much.
With the ridiculous prices on some craft beer a lot of people don't buy many at a time,  so it's double important that the brewery gets it right.

The majority are contract bottling and its out of their control until the complaints start coming in :(

Your right it's not for discussion in public area, folks can always post I had a beer X with the following dodgy flavour what is it?
One in Wexford has gone and a few more sailing close to the wind at the moment.

Franciscan Well Brewery Chieftain Irish Pale Ale. Pleasantly surprised! There's a lovely fresh flower aroma and a bright bitterness.

Blacks of Kinsale 'Irish Giant' barleywine 11%.

Not much detail on what type of barleywine they were going for.

For a barleywine I found it quite thin in body, more like that of a quad but without the yeast characteristics or other flavours.

Have to say not impressed, didn't finish it and remainder has gone into my slops jar for baking.

I'm currently drinking a bottle I scooped up during the BrewCon cleanup. It's a yellow capped, amber coloured hoppy beer, I'd guess in DIPA category. Not sure who left it but kudos to the brewer!

Sweet jesus. Never try Sol Clamato. It's a 2.5% lager, clam, tomato, spice beer. Tastes like someone has watered down tomato juice and added spices and shellfish flavouring. 2 sips were all I could manage.
