Post by: chka123 on October 10, 2017, 02:23:53 AM
Hi. Im trying to make the clone of Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. Got the recipe from byo.com

This is the original recipe:

4.5 kg   Coopers Light malt extract syrup
450 g    Hugh Baird Carastan malt
227 g    Hugh Baird Brown malt
227 g    chocolate malt
450 g    crystal malt (120° L)
114 g roasted black barley

22.7 AAU Cluster hops (bittering) (3.25 oz. of 7% alpha acid)
9.0 AAU Northern Brewer hops (aroma hops) (1 oz. of 9% alpha acid)
8.8 AAU Centennial hops (aroma) (1 oz. of 8.8% alpha acid)

As some of the hops and grains are not available here i had to do few changes. Can anyone with more experience let me know how this would work out.

Modified recipe:

4.5 kg    Light malt extract
450 g     Weyermann Caramunich Type 2 (EBC 110-130)
227 g     Crisp Brown Malt (EBC 110-135)
227 g     Crisp Chocolate Malt (EBC 820-1000)
450 g     Weyermann CaraAroma Malt (EBC 350 - 450)
114 g     Crisp Roasted Barley (EBC 1100-1300)

50 g       Nugget t90 Hop Pellets 2015 (Alpha Rating 12.9%) bittering
35 g       Northern Brewer t90 Hop Pellets 2015 (Alpha Rating 7.7%)aroma
30 g       Centennial t90 Hop Pellets 2016 (Alpha Rating 8.6%)aroma

looks good. Remember that BYO recipes themselves have shown not to be as accurate to the beer they are cloning sometimes. I seem to recall their Fullers recipes a bit out. ;)

What numbers are you aiming for?

I brewed this extract recipe a few years back, turned out ok. Finished a bit sweet for me; if I was doing it again Id use a yeast that finishes drier; notti maybe.
