Title: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: Hop Bomb on October 27, 2014, 10:10:47 PM
We will host the first leg of the nationals this Feb. We need lots of local judges and stewards.
Is anyone interested in a beer judging crash course + off flavour session? It's something we could do over a course of maybe Sat/Sun mornings or maybe a weekday night.

Post your name if interested and we can iron out logistics later. No prior experience necessary so don't be shy.

Definitely interested in learning about off-flavours.
I would only put myself forward as a judge if I were deemed capable by the elder ones!

Not sure of times/durations etc. Just putting out feelers.

Cycle?
Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: Hop Bomb on November 01, 2014, 09:15:03 AM
You could drive. The tasting meets are just that - small tasters (150ml or so each) with lots of talking & writing. If we discuss, taste & score 4 beers thats a bit over a pint of beer spread over two hours or more. So no need to be getting lifts or taxis. Its not a piss up but if you want to have a few after then dont drive obviously.

For the first meet we can all get to know each other (lots of new people - welcome folks!).  We can discuss the upcoming competition, styles that we may be judging & get familiar with the style guide & score sheets. We can also decide on a day & time to meet as we cant put everything to a poll as we'll get nothing done. Dont stress if you cant make a meeting. Most of this can be done at home with a bottle of beer, bjcp app on your phone & a score sheet. I would urge everyone to make the off flavour session though (date tbc)

Poll at the top to decide the first meeting date.

Believe me you don't drink the whole of the glass.

The smell and then 2 or 3 sips is enough.

So the first meet will be this Tue 11th. 7.30pm at the Cottage Bar in Lower Salthill. All welcome. We can discuss the categories we've been given & get everyone familiar with a pencil & a score sheet :)  There wont be much drinking done (unless you want to) so driving to & from the meet is possible.

If you can make it this Tue stick your name below:

What categories are we doing Tuesday?
Wouldn't do any harm to be able to be studying the guidelines in advance.

No need to bring samples yet. If ye want to look over BJCP 10A & 10B (we may not get through them but good to have a glance at them anyway). Il bring the beers.  :)
Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:

Ive bought most of the beers for the categories just there. Still have a few more to get but have most now. This is what ye have to look forward to:

Il will need to be reimbursed from everyone obviously but it wont be a lot once its spread between everyone.

Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: Hop Bomb on March 22, 2015, 11:53:25 AM
Any interest in this starting up again? Maybe instead of picking a particular style you can bring a homebrew sample & we can taste & write score sheets for it. Discuss the good & bad points of each beer & feedback on how to brew it better.

Midweek night every three weeks maybe? 7.30pm - 10pm.  If there is interest Il organise another venue as Cottage bar is closed now.
Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: montofk on March 22, 2015, 05:04:58 PM
Yep I'd be interested in restarting it. What you're describing sounds like some kind of organised homebrew meeting! Combine them?
Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: St. Fursey on March 26, 2015, 10:44:17 PM
Definitely interested.  Combining with homebrew tasting could work. Would it be too much work to brew for the style being tasted?
Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: Kevco5 on March 26, 2015, 11:09:10 PM
It appears I'll be off tuesday nights for the near future, so if that suits I'll be well up for it! Won't be brewing for it specifically though!
Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: Hop Bomb on March 26, 2015, 11:15:40 PM
It'd take some forward planning to brew specifically for it but would be good to bust people out of their IPA rut & brew lots of different styles.

Lets say May meet for the first one of these planned brewed tastings? Plus we could taste other styles people bring also obviously.

Someone pick a style there thats easy turnover by mid may.
Title: Re: Beer judging crash course:
Post by: montofk on March 27, 2015, 12:52:34 AM
I have a Saison on which should be ready by May and a... (ahem) IPA :P just bottled.
My next possible brew day would be mid April at the earliest. I was sort of planning a English pale, I might change away from that again.

It'll be next weekend earliest before I can brew anything, Will do a SMASH I was planning anyway and keep it <4%, it can enter the comp if it's ready, if not it can enter my belly.

Mine turned out a lovely colour but it's definitely not amber.  I'll have to rename/restyle it on the day when i taste it!
