Gary at AJ Edge will fill any size CO2 tank for €10. There is better value with larger cylinders.
They have stock of 5Kg tanks that they're happy to give away - old fire extinguishers with no valves. If you buy a valve for €28 from them they'll stick it on a tank for you, and for another €10 they'll fill it. So €38 for a 5Kg tank full.
Also, if you have a smaller cylinder (say 2Kg) they will swap the valve onto a 5Kg and fill it for a tenner all in once the customer's valve matches a tank in stock. so you can upgrade a 2Kg tank to a 5Kg for free.
Just say you're from the National Homebrew Club.
Great work! Will be taking advantage of that great offer in the not too distant future.
Well done Tube for finding AJ Edge how did you ever come across them and getting a deal for gas as well ;)
So glad its a sticky, it'll never disappear into room 101 now.
Maybe you should stick a link in for those of us who are extremely lazy!
Can't find their Website so this will do:
http://www.sayso.ie/en/bray-30280/aj-edge-ltd-p11742050
Any idea if they open at the weekends? Or are they a 9-5 setup?
It's only 20 mins walk from the dart station according to google earth as well so handy for us who are on foot!
Well done.
I will see about the 2kg to 5kg with valve swap next time I need a refill.
Do you buy the valves off them or where?
€28 or 40 for filled tank no possibility for postal etc
what do you want with a tank of C02 ;)
I use mixed gas and am toying with the idea of using pure c02 for force carbing , the last few attempts have been a bit hit and miss good head retention but not so much bubbles on the tongue/ a bit flat for the sytle etc. With the fire extinguisher do you need an extra regulator? , i.e. how do ye determine or know how much co2 you have pushed/ carbed the corny with to avoid over carbing ?

Yes a €35 reg from Alex connected to the tank set at 10-20psi depending on what you are carbing
Might chance getting a fitting for adapting the mixed reg to take a co2 bottle , from what i gather they are set to a take a higher pressure than a co2 bottle , so there should be no saftey issues, i am sure a brass fitting might do the job form a weld shop or something
Just to update this thread re AJ EDGE in bray, Gary and his boss confirmed to me that getting hold of 5 kg steel tanks is getting harder to source as they are all being replaced by aluminiun and it's the luck of the draw if they have them now or not.
The price is in fact €40 for a second hand steel filled one incl valve.
If you just want a tank filled irrespective if its 2,5 or 6kg its still just €10 :).
He has the option to supply shiny new red alumium tanks (they are lovely and if I was starting out..) but the valve into the tank itself is straight rather than tapered and is more expensive at 32 euro. A full new shiny red aluminium tank filled will set you back €80.
Remember to quote NHC!
Ps I cleaned him out of steel ones before I left ;)

No, but the 14 pints you drank carbed from it might
I believe a certain treasurer and a "Welsh git you know " have a number of mixed gas bottles that just need re-valving to suit CO2.
( A mixed gas bottle is tested to a higher pressure than the CO2 bottles, but having said that a lot of CO2 bottles are indeed mixed gas bottles originally but fitted with a CO2 valve
sshhhhh mixed gas coming u will need them for swaps
Does anyone know what time he is open till or whether they are open tomorrow (Sunday)? Ta
Huh!

Hi Shane, do you know how much these guys are asking for the 2Kg bottles?
It's the same price unfortunately so 30 for the valve and a tenner to fill it, the tank is free, hence unless you specifically want a small one 5kgs is your best bet
Hoping to get my 5kg tank refilled tomorrow. Anyone know if the close for lunch and has anybody pick up another 5kg tank recently or are they still out of stock?
Cheers
Lunch isn't a good time for them
They have tanks and valves again.
Thanks CH
Is anyone heading over that way and is based in Dublin City or North City? I could give money before and some homebrew in exchange for the favour.
AJ Edge out of tank valves, will have them back in 3/4 weeks time
Anyone been out since? With the keg GB coming in now I'd say there'll be a bit of a run on them.
I'm planning on hitting them up soon anyway.
I really need to get a refill before Christmas. Trying to eek the last out of the tank at the moment.

Was out with them a couple of weeks ago to pick up a new valve & (used) tank. They had the valves in at that time.
Give them a buzz before you travel to confirm. Make sure you say it's for homebrew to get best price. Decent guys out there.
Just wanted to chime in and recommend the lads in aj edge. Very reasonable price-wise and well used to dealing with the brewers.
Did they in AJ ever state the purity of their CO2? Reading this (http://thebrewingnetwork.com/BN-Army-Blog/C02-Myths-and-Rumors) makes me want to know its food grade or not :)
They told me it was food grade when I got a bottle
Ah great. Might head down with my cylinder so and see what they can do.
Just been down for another refill. Still €10 for 6 kg of CO2. Last one lasted me 16 months serving 33 brews.
Had a bit of trouble finding it first time I visited so noted down GPS coords this time to save somebody else the hassle.
They are: N 53° 12.663', W 06° 06.748'
Was down there today to pick up a new tank, so they're still in stock. I rang ahead yesterday and they made one up in advance for me. Got a nice used 5 kg tank with new valve. Great guys.
Yep they are really nice guys, can everybody please continue to be nice to them as they are subsidising the NHC, a guy called in ahead of me a week ago and he was charged 20 to fill a tank, not sure what his wanted it for but he asked for and was given a receipt.
I used to pay 25euro in doyle doyle til i discovered aj edge!

Was in with AJ Edge yesterday, because of STG and the cost of the valves the price on 5 or 6kgs tanks is now €45, which includes the €10 worth of gas.
The €10 for the gas fill still represents good value for money. Important you mention you are from the NHC as they have regular joes and commercial fellas showing up paying a lot more than that.
Not sure if a mod wants to edit Jimmy's first post?
How big are the 5-6Kgs Tanks? Would they be a bit big for an under the counter fridge? Or would it be best to get a smaller sized tank?
Here's one I got two weeks ago, it's about the same height as a corny so it will fit in an under counter fridge
(https://db.tt/vQQBqzEM)
Can you get smaller sizes? The fridge I have has a bit of a shelf at the back so if I end up getting 2 Cornys for it in the future the gas tank will need to be a bit small than a corny to fit in.
They have red 2Kg tanks as well smaller
you don't need to put your tank in the fridge either
How long would a 2KG tank last? Yeah I have seen you can keep it outside the fridge but im in enough trouble with having a Fridge lying around with the other half that I might be killed with a CO2 tank sitting next to it! :)
Are these guys open Saturdays just rang to check but no answer
No they're not.
Thanks
I was sure they used to be.
Definitely closed on a Saturday called in a month ago
They were never open Sat and close 330 on Fridays, you rock up 3.25 you will be told to foxtrot Oscar
If anyone is heading out there can they give me a shout? I'm based in Dublin but no car so Bray is hard for me to get to during working hours.
FYI lads,
Fintona Tyre Service in Omagh, Co. Tyrone have confirmed that the price for 10L mixed gas is £55 deposit, £20 fill and £10 delivery. Same price applies whether 50:50, 60:40 or 70:30 mix.
Contact is Mark on +44 791930812, he's happy to be listed on the forum at the prices above and he has stock in at present. I'm going to get a 70:30 bottle myself and will update.
Agents for Hoby weld and these guys, http://www.dixonsgas.co.uk/cellar-gas-department, the €110 to start with I guess is a bit of an investment but circa €50 at todays rate for the next fill looks alright post some pics when it arrives.
Wonder would he do a group rate on a group buy... ;) I mean, all those guaranteed refills - seems like a no brainer for him to me :)

Where's the €50 for next fill coming from? £20/€26 for the refill, £30/€38 incl. delivery. I tried to contact Dixon Gas before and didn't get a reply from them. The issue is getting stock onto the island of Ireland, as regular couriers won't touch gas when it comes to overseas delivery.

Ahh but would ye drink your way through 10L of gas quick enough to make it worth his while!
Mixed gas is not like CO2. That liquifies so 5 Kgs of CO2 converts into a huge amount of CO2.
Mixed gas is just compressed so a 10 litre tank filled to 220 bar equals 2,200 litres.
So that is what is in the tank!

Great. Do you know the dimensions?
He might not see that for a while can next person visiting post a pic?
Just an update, I went to AJ Edge lats week. Great guys. Got a used 2kg tank, new valve and a refil for 40EUR. 10EUR a fill after that. I didn't want a bigger tank as it has to fit inside my fridge, so I didn't enquire about larger sizes.
Did they show you those shiny aluminium ones on the floor :)
It was a sea of Red tanks everywhere, I didn't know where to look. I can't remember seeing any but their not short on tanks that's for certain!
Yeah it's a bit like looking for the face in the Dolphin pic alright
Do they take cards or only cash?
Cash only unfortunately...

They take cards now, they have a little device that good up to the smartphone to scan the card. I used my debit card the last time I was there
They still prefer cash and it's only a tenner tbh you have to go upstairs with a card
Just went there today. Great service as always. In and out in < 5 mins. Parking is a nightmare though!!
Anyone know when they are closing for Xmas? I need to get up there next week and get a spare tank before Xmas.
I didn't ask but I would try and head down there Monday if possible!
Ideal time is 11-12 or 2 -4 Monday to thurs as they have cleared the morning crap they close at 3.30 Friday
They close Tomorrow Thursday in case you were planning a visit Friday
Think I'll survive till after Xmas anyway.
Aynbody been out here recently? Still a tenner for gas? I hate going on the dart with a converted fire extinguisher, always get funny looks.
Yep was there a couple of weeks ago. Filled two tanks for €20 😂
Do AJ Edge just supply the Gas refill or can you get a cylinder with Gas and a regulator off them. Looking to get kegging. Have 3 kegs, just need to pick up all the bits and pieces.
They do have tanks but they can be all sorts. Better ring them to find out what they have. Tanks normally cost €40
I presume there are no other options for refills in dublin? Anyone know when AJ opens?
Monday morning. They don't open weekends.
I actually what time in the morning do they open?
I presume they are a 9 to 5 sort of place.
Yeah 9am as far as I know.
finish at 1pm on a Friday too, just in case you are going then too.
& they close for lunch from 1-2

Called in today to get a 5kg cylinder filled (€8). Good service, similar experience to aj edge
I asked them for a price for a new co2 tank but they said they wouldn't have new tanks for a few weeks. Didn't say what the price would be.
For those interested a new 5kg tank in AJ was €45.
Refills still 10

Can you just call in to them, or do you need to give them a ring first?
I'd suggest going in about 2PM. You don't need to call them
They close early on Friday apart from that just call in during working hours.
Thanks folks. Called in and got tanks filled with no hassles.
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone is planning on heading out there from the Dublin side soon?
I'm looking to get a co2 tank (in around 5kg) but I'm actually based in Tipperary and work standard days so would never get there.
I have a few mates based in Dublin that could bring it down to me at the weekend if someone could get it that far and I'd sort them out no problem.
Thanks.
https://www.kssfiresuppression.ie/
You could contact these either, might be easier to get to, based in tallaght.
They didn't have any tanks when I was looking but they said they would be getting some in. Don't know what price but their refills are €8.
I messaged those guys. They said they did refills but not tanks. Didn't give me the impression that they planned on doing tanks at any stage.
Popped out to KSS today. Much handier location than Bray and a bit cheaper alright - €8 for 5kg. Just be careful if you have a 6kg tank like myself though as your man was trying to charge me €23 for two kegs. Basically the extra kg on one of kegs was pushing the price to €15 for the keg, so i just asked for the 5 kg.
Just to say AJ Edge are now closed for CO2 refills until 6th Jan.
Oh thanks for that, I was planning on taking a spin out next week. Saved me a fruitless trip

Are folks still able to get gas? One of our guys was told by AJ that they aren't doing refills right now
I know they (& the industry) ran out last summer for a short while.
I wonder if now it's due to COVID sourcing shortages.
I'll give them a call on Monday to check (they close at 3 on a Fri)

I'm just off the phone with them. Sounds like they don't have new cylinders but they are doing refills. Usual rules apply, don't come down late while they are closing up shop. Give a buzz in advance to be safe.
Good to know. Thanks!
Are AJ Edge doing refills at the moment does anybody know?
I was in with them today to pick up a cylinder of gas and they are back doing refills and have plenty of 5kg cylinders back in stock
I am heading there tomorrow so good to know
Hi,
Im fairly new to homebrewing but have decided to give kegging a go.
I picked up a 2nd-hand corny keg and now I'm looking for a CO2 cylinder.
If I want to get a 5kg cylinder, what should I ask AJ Edge for?
They will sell you a cylinder for €50.
Do they also stock regulators?
I have one that works with sodastream cylinders, but I assuming a real cylinder will need a different regulator?
Not sure if they stock regulators but here is one I ordered recently and I use it with a cylinder I got from AJ edge https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B083199459?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image
perfect. thanks! :)
Quote from: patk46 on April 29, 2021, 10:05:29 PMI've everything ready now to keg except gas and had a few queries about getting some.
- are they allowed sell the extinguishers for beer use? Like can you walk in and ask for it for that reason or do you need to pretend it's for something else?
- if the above is ok, do you need to bring a regulator or is it something that can be fitted yourself after once you see what size the fitting is? I have a regulator but I've no idea if it will fit a fire extinguisher.
- what's the biggest one that can be got? So as not to have to keep making trips back to them.
Thanks.
Hey,
Yeah it's fine. AJ sells canisters and refills just say you need gas.
No need to bring your regulator as its a standard size fitting.
I am not sure about sizes, I think it might be 2.5kg or 5kg
if you are concerned about repeat trips, seriously think about getting a second cylinder. If you drain your tank with an overnight leak, at least you have a backup, and are only out the price of a refill.
It is also very practical to have a second cylinder, so that you dont have to pull apart your kegerator in order to do brewery tasks like purge kegs, transfers etc.

Kinda wishing I am following my advice right now ... CO2 bottle just kicked. Now on sodastream life support (but at least the brown ale is tasting good).
Need to do closed transfers from FV. I guess I am going to have to use a (just kicked) keg as a CO2 source.
Fishing the big cylinder out of the keezer and taking it apart from the gas distribution is a faff. It's doable, and not too hard to shift around when it's free. It's a lot lighter than a full 19L corny keg for instance. And way lighter than a pub gas bottle.
But if you want to use your second keg for more portable procedures like you say, bringing it into the kitchen to purge kegs, or out to the garden for the BBQ, or any number of other brewhouse (as opposed to dispense) tasks, the smaller size might be a benefit.
