Title: [Review] Bulldog Triple Tykes Special Export Ale - 4kg Kit
Post by: Garry on April 15, 2013, 11:14:51 AM
This is the kit I won courtesy of Home Brew West (thanks  [smiley=beer.gif]). I put it on last night and it is a very easy kit to do. I took loads of photos and I'll do a full write up when I bottle it. But just to let you see whats in the box:

The bag of extract is really simple to use. There's no need for a tin opener! When you tip the extract into the fermentor you can fill the bag up with hot water, put the cap on and shake it up. Then tip this into the fermentor and you get all the extract out of the bag without cutting or burning your fingers  :)

I didn't time myself but it felt like only half an hour start to finish?

Garry what hops did you get with this and did you chuck the bag and all into fv?

The hops are Target/Goldings.

I haven't added the hops yet, the instructions say:

QuoteAfter 4 days of fermentation – open the hop pellet
sachet carefully and soak the inner "teabag" in a cup
of boiling water for 10 minutes. Then add the
mixture including the "teabag" to your brew. Leave
it in the brew during the rest of the fermentation.
For a stronger hop aroma, add the hops at the end of
fermentation instead.

But it also gives some tweaking options:

QuoteHop pellets - tweaking options
This kit contains a sachet of Finishing Hop Pellets.
These are not intended to provide the main bitterness of
your beer, we have already added hops to the malt
extract for this purpose. Instead, the hop pellets are
intended to add a finishing touch of extra fresh hop
flavour and aroma.
Our normal instruction tells you to add the hop pellets
half way through fermentation (see instruction 7) but
you can actually adjust the level of hop aroma by adding
the pellets at fermentation start instead (less aroma) or
just before bottling/kegging (more aroma).

I think I'll add the hops to the fermentor after a week and leave for another week before bottling.

You can download the full instructions here:

Those hop teabags are so simple to use, they're great.
Just a pity you can't get bigger ones.

The kit looks pretty cool, what was your OG?

OG was 1.050.

Excellent Garry!
Constructive criticism...
The bulb in your Ferm Chamber might light-strike your brew.
Sanitising the capper - The capping chamber is mild steel - you'll get rust in there!

I've been meaning to get one of those tube heaters for the fermenting box but I haven't got round to it yet! I put an old extract tin over the bulb for the moment. I reckon the bulb is only on for a few minutes a day anyway, the insulation seems to be keeping the heat in well.

I better put the Capper on the rad tonight to make sure it's dry. Are you saying I shouldn't need to sanitise it at all?

Wel dun garry on all your work putting that kit sequence together, very helpful for the newbies especially good for them to see u need to sanitise things like scissors.
I go a little step further and regularly use alcohol sanitiser on my hands as well and keep the FV covered as much as possible with the lid while transferring, keeping in mind the air is full of wild yeasts and bacteria and worth keeping in mind as the weather warms up those little feckers the fruit flies will be dive-bombing as well! They love beer!

Wel dun again on your post.
regards Brendan

Groovy looking chamber.
Have you got the build detail?
I am about to move from a bulb in a roses tin to a 60w tube heater myself.

@johnrm, I have some pictures of the fermenting box, I'll upload them in the morning when I'm back at the proper PC! I'm a bit slow on the talkatapa!

@brenmurph, some good tips there. I'm only brewing since December so I haven't done any summer brew yet. A few fruit flies wouldn't do too much harm would they? The extra protein might help head retention?

head retantion may be great  but if the dudes pass on some bacteria and yeasts from the banana skins they were playin with a while ago you may have a belgian sour beer! instead of your export ale!

Wow, you've got all the toys!
What do you think of that bottling tree for the heavier glass bottles? I've had my eye on one those for a while.

The trees are good and sturdy.
They hold Franciscan Well bottles.

I use one of the trees for draining glass swing tops. Have not had any problems with the weight of the bottles but spacing them properly so that I can fit approx 40 bottles can be  challenging.

No problem with heavier bottles Eoin, I had a few 1L glass bottles on it last week when I was bottling a wine. When you're putting on the bottles start from the bottom and work up.

The bottle tree is great but it probably isn't essential. I was using a sheet of ply with holes in it to drain the bottles and this did the job quite well too. I would definitely recommend the bottle washer though. It says on HBW's website that the washer in not suitable for the coopers plastic bottles but it works OK for me, you just have to hold the bottle at the edge of the nozzle when squirting in the sanitiser.

Have you got the build detail?

Here it goes John:

I got 3 sheets of 1200x600x55 aeroboard (2400x1200 sheets are cheaper but they wouldn't fit in my car!). The kingspan or xtratherm insulation would actually be better if you can stretch the budget?

These can be cut with a sharp knife or wood saw (the knife makes less of a mess though).

You need to cut:

4 no. 600x600 for the top/bottom and 2 sides.
2 no. 600x490 for the front and back.

I used long wood screws (ø4x70)  to hold it all together before taping up the joints with duct tape.

The front panel is the "door". I didn't make any fancy hinges or anything, it just pushes in and out.

Here's a detailed plan!!:

I put a 4mm piece of ply on the base so the fermentor won't tear the aeroboard when I slide it in and out.

The lead is wired up to a standard central heating type room stat which is wired to a 40w bulb.

I have a 2L bottle of water in the freezer and I put this into the box if the temperature gets too cozy. I might have to come up with something a bit more efficient soon with summer coming. I was thinking of a computer fan or something and maybe replace the stat with an stc-1000?

Why did you add vinegar to the bleach, correct me if i'm wrong but if you add an acid to bleach it will release chlorine gas, not good for the lungs

Yes, if you add neat vinegar to neat bleach it will release chlorine gas, please don't do that!

If you add the bleach to the water, then add the vinegar like I've shown,  it creates a no-rinse sanitiser. I don't know the science behind this but I'm sure someone else will chime in. I think the vinegar reduces the ph of the bleach or something? All I know is it works.

My review:

First off, I'm not a connoisseur and it will be a long time before I'll sit the BCJP exam! In fact, I'd happily suck on a few pints of Carlsberg on a night out  :o There, I said it!

I have this kit bottled with 5½ weeks now. I tried one at two weeks old and it was too flat with a very strong banana aroma and taste. At 3 and 4 weeks the carbonation was getting better and the banana was fading. I tried another one last night. It's probably carbonated to the right level now for an English style beer? The carbonation is like a cask pulled ale. The instructions said 1 carbonation drop per 500ml bottle so that's what I used (I normally use 1½ or 2). The beer is very clear now with a dark red colour. The banana appears to be gone. The aroma and taste are strong dark fruit. It reminds me of a red wine actually. It could probably do with more conditioning since the FG was highish at 1014. It's a bit heavy for my taste to be honest but this might mellow down in time. Or maybe I need to man up?

I'll bring a few bottles along to the Brew It Yourself expo at the Franciscan Well in a few weeks (22nd June) if anyone wants to give it a try. I'll get some expert opinions there for sure and will report back.

very handy writeup. I got one of these kits the other day so I'll be trying it soon.
I'd never have thought of sanitising the scissors !

I've never sanitized my scissors and I've never got an infection.
But better safe than sorry, sanitize everything you can think of.

I think this kit just needs a bit of time. I'm drinking one now and it's growing on me  :)

I bought the cerveza kit since (the 5 euro fermenter had nothing to do with it!) It's the perfect summer drink. My Coors lite drinking buddys are loving it  :)

That's good to hear, I've mine on the go now. I'm looking forward to trying it, but not to waiting :)

If it's the Coopers' Mexican Cerveza I like it.
Very simple, refreshing and easy to drink   :)

I took 20 or so bottles of this to the Expo in the Franciscan Well on Saturday. I wasn't on the bar myself but all the bottles were drank and it got positive reviews. The few people that I talked to were very surprised that it was a straight kit with no hacks  :)

Rumples? As in Rumplestiltskin?
Did you promise away your first-born etc.

I'm not fond of cats.
(but a tad less fond of rats)
We have a dog.
I gathered about 3KG of shit yesterday so I could cut the (small) lawn.
Correction, My wife has a dog.
The 3KG of finest Black Moroccan is stacked in the middle of the lawn for my missus to Deal (with).

AHA! Now I know why my mother gave me a dirty look when I introduced her to Rumplestiltskin (yes, that's the long version) i completely forgot about the whole promise of my firstborn... Ah well, Simon better keep an eye out...
I have a dog too. It's easier just to mow the shit. It shoots off to th side with any dead birds/rats the cat brings home.
Nature at its finest  ;D

Great stuff Garry, the fermentation chamber looks brilliant - you've inspired me to make one of my own. Where did you get the aeroboard? I can't seem to find anywhere to buy it near me.

I got the insulation in MD O'Sheas in Ballincollig. It should be available in most builders providers though? if you can stretch the budget I'd go for the yellow dense insulation instead of aeroboard. it would be more durable and a bit more efficient too.

Great thread Garry. Thank you. Love the fermentation chamber and why didn't I think of the wall stat?
As far as the 4kg Bulldog brews go I made one of 'The Hammer of Thor' (super cheesy name) special gravity beer and while it wasn't what I was looking for everyone who drank it said it was great. Looked and tasted a bit like a weisbeer. Worth trying maybe. Thanks again dude.
