Title: Barrel #1 Refill
Post by: Dodge on November 03, 2015, 10:57:21 AM
Now that the Oud Bruin is out of the barrel, it's time to get a list going of who wants to refill it. On a previous post it was agreed to refill with a Flanders Red. So here we go

Ok here is a recipe for the Flanders Red. I'd like to get the barrel filled in 3-4weeks time so let me know how this time frame suits everyone. It gives everyone time to get ingredients or suggest changes.

2.38kg Pilsner
2.38kg Vienna
227g wheat malt
450g Munich
227g Aromatic
227g CaraMunich
227g Special B
23g 5% EKG

I'd like to get a few packs of Roselare Yeast ( qty 4) so may ask for a little donation if we split it between everyone contributing.

Closer to brewday and refill, individuals can start fermentation with neutral yeast. I'll add the culture in the barrel

Let me know what you all think so we can plan

How many litres is that recipe for/ what's the target OG?

I'm fine with the 3/4 week date.

Are we delivering to yours Rodger?
Title: Re: Barrel #1 Refill
Post by: Dodge on November 11, 2015, 10:18:48 AM
Sorry batch size for 20l

OG was 1.067
FG was 1.013
Mash was @ 68C
Boil was 90 min

I can collect from Lucan Area on the way home from work but we can work things out

Will and CH there is no issue with you wanting to contribute.

We'd like to keep it to 20l each if the both of you want to join, just post here. If your batch size has to be bigger then again let us know.

We are at 160l so this would bring us up to 200l

Thanks Dodge,

I know John and myself are just happy to help!
We will brew if needed!

I have been involved with many a whiskey barrel fill and know for a fact that:

Barrel Size: 220 litres (for example)

Brewers: Commit to 10 x 22 litres.

Result: You willl be short about 20 litres or more!

Mr Dodge I was only offering to help you across the line and LS and others look like they are happy to do a bit extra so happy to contribute or step aside what ever works.

Thanks guys!

Ok so if everyone on the list can confirm the amount they want to brew please. We will give it over the weekend for all to confirm and then we can see how much we are short.

After that Will and John can be informed

I'd like to put 25l in (and get 25 out  ;) ) but I'll be pragmatic and go with 20l as I have a drum that can be sealed for transport.

I'll probably take you up on the collection offer Dodge, thanks.

Ok after deliberating here is the list of people and there quota

Lordstilton 20l
imark 20 - 40L
Eanna - 20L (or 25 if it suits)
GarLo 20L
DEMPSEY 20L
DamienE 20L
Person X 20L
Eoin 50L

Can we all look at brewing dates as I want to get the barrel filled soon and not leave it too long

Looking at 28/29th or following week.

Those that brew sooner to that date can start ferment with neutral yeast. I will try to collect after work around 5pm when individuals are ready and it suits. We can also look at organizing meeting up etc at a common place once dates are set for collection

Roger, There are various aromatic malts ranging from 50-400EBC. I presume we're looking for the light stuff?

Sorry for the delay. I used the light Aromatic malt the last time but if you have picked up darker malt I'd say go with it.

Can we put up a list of when everyone intends to brew?

Firstly too let all know that Garlo can't brew his share so we will be a batch down. If anyone wants to brew to fill feel free to say so

Secondly how are all the beers doing?

I'd like to organise collection.

Mark had kindly agreed ( please verify) as a collection point to help me. If I know who has beer there then it will help me.

I'm happy to be a drop point.

Mine finished primary fermentation.

What volume is the barrel? I think we're only at 190L? Is it worth scheduling up extra (just in case)?

If someone wants to add extra then that's fine.

I'd like to try and collect a few tomorrow evening around 8ish if that's alright. The rest I can collect during the week.

If tomorrow evening is no good then I can leave for during the week.

Ok lads.

I appreciate everyone's patience in this beer.  It's been nearly a year and it's time to get this one out.

I'm working days now so I can call past in the evening to collect some empty kegs/ containers. Once I have everyone I'll empty and re deliver.

Is it possible if we could have a central collection point for pick up and drop off?
