Doing an wheat extract brew in a few weeks. I saw an article online about extract brewing and gave a few tips. http://byo.com/malt/item/10-10-steps-to-better-extract-brewing and decided to do a 5gal boil

My recipe calls for the addition of 500g DME 15 min before flame out. My main question is do i have to add it directly or could I mix it into a gallon or less of boiling water and then add that to the boil? If i did would this effect the end result much i.e. the head retention etc.

Either way would be fine. I've started adding late extract after the boil with no issues. You'll get better hop utilisation by adding the majority of the extract late. You'll also not be greatly affected by Maillard reaction and therefore achieve much lighter coloured beer. I haven't noticed any difference in head retention.

Adding after flame out?

Yeah sure beginner kits don't even involve boiling at all so it shouldn't cause any problems.
