Title: Malting your own grain
Post by: iBrau on February 18, 2020, 09:54:39 AM
Has anyone malted barley at home?
A friend of mine grows malting barley for MCI and has given me a bucket of winnowed grain which I'd like to brew with.

Would anyone have tips for malting a small quantity, say 10kg of grain? Or is it just too much work or difficult to get right?

I've never done it, but from what I've read it is quite a bit of work. You have to keep the grains damp to germinate and then you have to dry them without letting them go mouldy so you have to move them frequently. With barley there is an extra step of having to roast the grains afterwards - you can make a beer with wheat without needing to roast.

You could try it with a small amount first and see how that goes.

You could just roast it to whatever color you want and use as a specialty malt rather then going the full process of malting.

I have done it! It takes a lot of work and effort to initially sprout the grains. Then you have to dry/kiln them.

So I used the tumble drier!! Smelled delicious and so did the subsequent laundered items!!

Was it worth it?
