Mikkeller Beer Club - August 2018.

So I've been subscribing to the Mikkeller Beer Mail box for a few months now (and there's a thread over here about it). I enjoy it but after watching a couple of promo videos for the Beer Club I thought I would give it a go.

There's more of a cross over with the Beer Mail than I would have thought - with 3 beers appearing in both. Most of the Mikkeller beers are from San Diego rather than De Proef in Belgium.

Like with Beer Mail the 'free' glass for subscribers was delayed until September , here's what it will look like though:

Here's August's selection - some nice looking Summer drinking.

So, what about the cost?
So the beer club costs 500 DKK (plus 130 DKK shipping) so that's about €84 and beer mail costs 350DKK (shipping included), about €47. Is the difference in subscriptions worth the massive price difference?

Well the main difference in what you get is that, this month at least, you get three beers from Mikkeller San Diego and one from 'The Veil'. I wondered about how much more expensive those beers would be individually from the Mikkeller webshop and well, the San Diego stuff isn't available there. It is up on a US Mikkeller site (shop.mikkellersd.com) though and averages $5.50 a can. I've drank craft in the States but my memory is hazy and it wasn't on the West Coast so I have no real idea of where that sits on the average price range.

I also couldn't find 'Green Ferrari' anywhere on sale in Europe (but I might have missed it - let me know if that's the case).  I guess  this means is that what you're paying for is the chance to get to drink these otherwise unavailable beers. Which, all being over 4 on untappd are pretty highly rated - for whatever that's worth to you. Is that worth it cash wise? I'm not 100% sure, but I think I'll keep the subscription going for a few months to see.

If any of this has tempted you to subscribe you can get 50% off your first order by using a referral code. This will bring the price down from about €84 to about €50, and if you do use it I'll get the same discount. My code is http://mikkelleraps.refr.cc/padraics.

Mikkeller Beer Mail - September 2018.

Here's September's selection. A couple of guest beers this month, all of which are highly rated. Add this to some Mikkeller classics like Beer Geek Vanilla shake and it's a good looking month. There are four beers rated 89% or above on Ratebeer, and the other five aren't reviewsed in enough numbers to get a rating either because they're limited edition or quite new. The Mikkeller glass should also arrive so that's a nice bonus.

What's coming up in October?

some leaks from the various Mikkeller social media accounts:

1. another beer from 'the Veil' brewing company. Their 'Green Ferrari' was in August's mailing and was great.
2. A 375ml bottle of a 28 month aged blended beer from Mikkeller Baghaven - this is Mikkeller's wild ale venture, where wild yeast and bacteria work away in 12 large oak foeders and over 50 Chardonnay barrels. Here's a preview of the bottle label:

Mikkeller Beer Club- October 2018.

Here's October's selection. I like the Mikkeller stouts I've had so far so I'm looking forward to this.
It's billed as "possibly the best box in the history of Beer Club" which is a big claim and makes me optimistic about what it will be like. What could make it better than other editions of the Beer Club or Beer Mail? Well, the average abv is fairly high at 8.9% so I guess you're getting some bang for your buck there. Ratings are harder to measure the box by since a lot of the contents don't have enough reviews yet for the sites to rank them. That said two of the beers are at 99% on RateBeer and five get over 4 on Untappd which is certainly promising.
Two of the guest beers - 'Dissect Me' from The Veil and 'Swimming Giants' from Burnt Mill & Finback were and canned in September so are really fresh.

1. Mikkeller: George
12.1% type. Bottle 330ml.
Description: Sweet heavy American Imperial / Double Stout. Reviewers talk about coffee, vanilla, mollases, roasted malt and a thick and oily feel.
Untappd: 4.07 https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-george/12534
Ratebeer: 99 https://www.ratebeer.com/beer/mikkeller-george-cherry-wine/243137/

2. Mikkeller Baghaven: Beer Club Blend #1
6.5% Sour Ale. Bottle 375ml.
Description: Baghaven is Mikkeller's sour and wild beer production facility and it seems like it's just kicking into gear now. Looking at the page on Untappd they have just 20 beers listed and they all date from this year.
This is described as "A blend of 33% turbid mashed spontaneously fermented ale and 67% foeder aged wild ale". The oldest componetn is over 2 years and it's been in the bottle about 10 months.
Next up they'll make a Honey Saison for the Beer Club - so expect that in a year of so...

Interesting viewing - Frank's at MBCCT (Mikkeller beer club celebration Tokyo) in Japan and interviews people involved with brewing some of the beers, including Mikkel. Everyone looks like they're enjoying the festival, even if they're tired, emotional or just the worse for wear. Turns out Lervig is where Mikkeller brew most of their dark beers ...

Hints of whats in store for next months Beer Club box:

More previews from Social Media - it looks like Sour Cellars, an all sour brewery from California, are brewing a beer for the Beer Club. Will presumably be a while before it's getting sent out.

They get pretty good reviews on untappd and ratebeer.

Mikkeller Beer Club - November 2018.

Here's November's selection. Lots of stouts, lots of coffee. No harm with the weather and darkness closing in. A great selection of beer with some real gems.

This month sees the inclusion of a  free mug. If you're an Irish tea drinker like most readers here will be then you'll find the size unsatisfying. It's the size of a novelty or gift mug rather than something you'd warm both hands around. At a family funeral it's the mug at the back of the press you'd give that cousin who's always been a bollix. Poor auld Beer Club they probably tried their best. God love them, sure they're hopeless innocent Danes who don't know any better.

Mikkeller Beer Mail - December 2018.

Here's December's selection. Lots of IPAa. Not having any stouts or porters or anything dark at all seems counter intuitive to me to be honest but there are some heavy hitting beers in here including 3 from the Alchemist - each of which get rated at 100 on Ratebeer. Throw in another two beers which score 95 and 96 and it's a good looking month.

Here's the preview video Mikkeller put out, this is one of the more fun videos we've seen recently. It's filmed with Umut, a bad motherfucker who runs a couple of Danish restaurants, including Guldkroen where this video is filmed. Umet's refreshingly unfamiliar with Mikkeller's beers - at one stage he says that he could never afford to buy ten of them. Anyway this is worth the watch:

Mikkeller Beer Club - January 2019

Here's January's selection. Ten beers this month so that's one more than I am used to. Lots of the Oregon Fruit Series bringing a new twist to IIPAs and the Spontan beers.

There are two different coffee raspberry Berliner Weisses -one at 3.7% and one at 8% so they'll be great to compare. Not a lot of different porters - just one in fact, but it's packed in a 750ml bottle which helps to make up for things.

1. Mikkeller: Chipolte Porter
6.6% Porter. Bottle 750ml.
Description: Spicy stout with chilli and vanilla.
Untappd: 3.71   https://untappd.com/b/mikkeller-chipotle-porter/451064
Ratebeer: 98 Though Ratebeer says that this is the same beer as 'Texas Ranger' which is disputed on Untappd. I haven't had TR so can't comment.

2. Mikkeller: Oregon Fruit Series: Spontanblueberry
7.7% Lambic. Bottle 375ml.
Description:  Funky lambic, this Oregon Fruit version rates slightly above the 'normal' one on Untappd but doesn't have enough reviews on RateBeer to get a rating.

Here's the preview video Mikkeller put out, it's pretty funny. The two lads intro the beers at their Xmas party and things degenerate as the night goes on.

This was previewed back in December - it should be out with February's box.

padraic_

Looks like the March box will be getting some chocolate.

phildo79

Do you find the beer mail club worth the monthly fee?

I am a fan of Mikkeller but it does seem pretty steep for approx 8 beers. I also am not really a fan of these 'dealers choice' style beer bundles. Having looked at what you have received some months, I'd be pretty disappointed upon opening the box.

padraic_

Sorry I haven't replied till now.

Honestly I'm happy with what I'm getting for what I'm paying. I'd knock it on the head otherwise. There could be more of a range of styles but I think the standard is good and I'm getting to drink beers and styles that I won't find in my local offie, or even my not so local beer specialist offie.

I also subscribed to the Brewdog monthly box for a few months and it just cycles through the same beers after a while which is disappointing.

I will say that I don't really pay full whack, the referral codes mean I get a 50% discount (discount doesn't apply to shipping) which definitely sweetens the deal.

phildo79

That is a quare discount. But depends on persuading someone else to give it a try.

Stumbled across a decent online beer supplier last week. BeerWulf. Based in Holland but postage is only £5 to NI (or free if you order a full 16 bottle case). Not sure how much postage would be to the free state though. Can't imagine it would be that much different.

But they did have some interesting stuff. I find that a lot of these online stockists just have the same stuff available (and the same stuff that's currently unavailable).
