Mikkeller Beer Club - February 2019.

Here's February's selection. One of these beers is 83 on RateBeer, the rest go from 91 to 100. Plenty of sours this month, including a Baghaven beer. Just 8 brews instead of the more typical 9 but not a bad showing all things considered. Oh, and we got a 'free' 330ml glass which is quite nice too!




1. Mikkeller Spontancherry Frederiksdal
7.2% Lambic. Bottle 375ml.
Description: Mikkeller's annual lambic, brewed with sour cherries from the Frederiksdal estate and aged in Oak barrels. This year's beer was brewed with the fruit from 2018's sunny Summer and the bottle got an upgrade too, with a cork and cage replacing the usual cap.

2. Mikkeller Bean Geek: Hazy IPA
4.9% IPA. Bottle 330ml.
Description: A hoppy citrusy IPA. the write up talks about a bitter choclate finish but I didn't get much of it. Maybe a choclaty dryness? Sessionable, maybe a little bland. Also in the Beer Mail for February.

3. Mikkeller Spontandoublelingonberry
% Lambic, fruited. Bottle 375ml.
Description: A whole lot of Lingonberry juice in the usual Mikkeller spontan brew. So sour, a bit much for me to be honest but it's super high rated on the different review sites.

4. Mikkeller NYC: Angels in the outfield.

Description: Verdant's hoppiest NEIPA. Some serious hype around this. Super murky, stone fruit.

6. Mikkeller San Diego: Triple Bocker
8.9% Bock - Doppelbock. Can / Bottle 500ml / 330ml.
Description: New style for me, a malt bomb of heady goodness. The raspberries just gave it an aftertaste, I found this lovely altogether.

7. Mikkeller San Diego: Mikkel Jackson

Description: NEIPA with Mandarina and Eldorado hops. Soft citrusy, more mandarin than grapefruit.

Mikkeller Beer Club - March 2019.

Here's March's selection. Only seven beers this month after some sort of mix-up. Heavy on the sours, which I've mixed feelings about, I mean I like them and look forward to a couple each month but I'd prefer a bit more variety to be honest. Sure I'll just space them out I guess.
The IPA and imperial stout also look great. There was also a small bar of Bean Geeks choclate in this month's box.

Description: Apex say "The V.I.C (Very Important Club) IPA is brewed exclusively for the Mikkeller Beer Club, March 2019. Based on our DDH Vic Secret & Mosaic IPA but features a different dry-hopping schedule and an even more Vic Secret-focused hop bill."

Beer Club April 2019

An unusual selection this month. Four of the beers also appeared in the much cheaper Beer Mail subscription but Mikkeller claim that the retail value of this box is 1060 DKK (about €134), which is almost double the 555 DKK claimed value for the Beer Mail.
What makes up the difference? The SpontanpentadrupelBlueberry 750ml bottle I guess. Last month there was one missing beer - a 'spontandoubleblueberry' and this month they've made up for it by including the 'pentadrupel' version. I haven't been able to find a retail price for this but I'm interested to find one.
Moving on from cost and the similarity to this month's Beer Mail and there's a decent variety of beers and styles. I haven't had a Warpigs brew before so I looked forward to that. Beer Geek varieties are always welcome too.
The box came with a 'free' glass and lanyard - this will get you into a 'Beer Club lounge' at MBCC [Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen, May 10th 2019] this year if you are heading along. I won't be going so am happy to give this to someone who is.

Description: Fermented for 8 months with 2.5kg of blueberries on each litre of Mikkellers' usual base beer. Allegedly the most  whihc for the reputed prcice of the box makes sense.

2. Mikkeller & Gaffel: Viking Kölsch
4.9% Kolsch. Bottle, 330ml.

Description: The collaboration that brought the free glass this month. Kolsch lager flavoured with hop extracts.  Funny that it gets 66 on Ratebeer but a solid 97 for style.

Allegedly brewed for Korea exclusively (until now) in collaboration with 'The booth' brewery.
Description:  Mild fruity floral aroma, nicely bitter flavour, clean finish, pithy aftertaste.

Mikkeller Beer Mail - May 2019.

Here's May's selection. It's MBCC month so you could expect a can of that, there's also a barley wine, some strong porters/ stours and a mix of IPAs and ales. Some months the boxes can be a bit one note so I appreciate a bit of variety.
A whopping five of the nine beers this month also appear in the cheaper Beer Mail, which is the most I've ever seen. I wonder if we're still paying for last month's Spontanpentadrupleblueberry?

3.7% Berlinner Weisse. Can 500ml.
Description: A Berlinner-Style weisse brewed with Kalamansi, a citrus from the Phillippines.

Description: Inspired by the Greek Portokalopita dessert, this is brewed with seven different malts, tangerine, cinnamon and milk sugar. A thick dessert to be enjoyed slowly.

Description: VIPP is a Danish store / company which started off selling pedal bins in the 1930s. Now they sell upscale furniture, Scandi design, prefab homes for the rich, hotel nights and they're collaborating on beer recipies. I would love to see the minutes for those meetings.

Description: easy drinking, roasty dry Irish stout. They "meticulously replicated Dublin water to create a smooth Dry Irish-style Stout with subtly sweet aromas and a distinctly mellow roast". Weird to see the NYC branch of a Danish brewery do a Guinness tribute basically.

Description: A blend of 1, 2, and 3 year old lambic. This is high in acidity while allegedly "maintaining a delicate balance that is both complex and fruity". Recommended to be paired with sharp cheeses "or simply as an aperitif".
