Title: Gas burner on adverts
Post by: Shane Phelan on April 28, 2013, 12:26:37 PM
I this looked pretty substantial for anyone considering gas brewing in the next couple of weeks.

I know nothing about gas burners, is that a good one? How big a burner would one need for a 50L stainless steel pot?

Where else can they be got?

Propane or butane?

I've always seen myself staying electric but due to barrel commitments I think a goos strong burner might be in order!

Propane for your gas ring. I use two of these lads:  http://www.gasproducts.co.uk/acatalog/Large_Square_Gas_Boiling_Ring.html
7.5 kwh  Ive one for my HLT & BK.  Deadly yokes.  I pushed the gas head closer to the bottom of my kegs so they'd heat quicker.

How many brews do you get out of a bottle of gas?

On butane im at 4 brews. Shit thing about butane is the boiler ring always loses power once you get near the bottom third of the tank so it renders all that gas useless for HB.
I switched to propane this week & that'll kill that problem. Propane also burns hotter so it'll be more efficient so Il get more brews for my money. Il keep a record & see how
many brews I get on 11kg of propane.

Please do.

I was considering going to gas but it sounds like it's much more expensive than electricity at ~€7.50 per brew in fuel.  :o

That with my setup though. The boiler head was a good few inches away from the bottom of my keg. Ive since pushed the head right up near the keg.
Propane + that change should get me to my sparge temps a lot quicker on the HLT & I will need less gas to keep a nice rolling boil going in the BK. Saturday is the
first day with all these changes so Il keep track of all my brews until Ive to change the gas again.
