Title: CO2 from AJ Edge, Bray, and the NHC
Post by: JimmyM on March 15, 2013, 03:25:00 PM
Gary at AJ Edge will fill any size CO2 tank for €10. There is better value with larger cylinders.

They have stock of 5Kg tanks that they're happy to give away - old fire extinguishers with no valves. If you buy a valve for €28 from them they'll stick it on a tank for you, and for another €10 they'll fill it. So €38 for a 5Kg tank full.

Also, if you have a smaller cylinder (say 2Kg) they will swap the valve onto a 5Kg and fill it for a tenner all in once the customer's valve matches a tank in stock. so you can upgrade a 2Kg tank to a 5Kg for free.

Just say you're from the National Homebrew Club.

Maybe you should stick a link in for those of us who are extremely lazy!

Can't find their Website so this will do:

http://www.sayso.ie/en/bray-30280/aj-edge-ltd-p11742050

Any idea if they open at the weekends? Or are they a 9-5 setup?

It's only 20 mins walk from the dart station according to google earth as well so handy for us who are on foot!

what do you want with a tank of C02 ;)

I use mixed gas and am toying with the idea of using pure c02 for force carbing , the last few attempts have been a bit hit and miss good head retention but not so much bubbles on the tongue/ a bit flat  for the sytle etc. With the fire extinguisher do you need an extra regulator? , i.e. how do ye determine or know how much co2 you have pushed/ carbed the corny with to avoid over carbing ?

Yes a €35 reg from Alex connected to the tank set at 10-20psi depending on what you are carbing

Might chance getting a fitting for adapting the mixed reg to take a co2 bottle , from what i gather they are set to a take a higher pressure than a co2 bottle , so there should be no saftey issues, i am sure a brass fitting might do the job form a weld shop or something

Just to update this thread re AJ EDGE in bray, Gary and his boss confirmed to me that getting hold of 5 kg steel tanks is getting harder to source as they are all being replaced by aluminiun and it's the luck of the draw if they have them now or not.
The price is in fact €40 for a second hand steel filled one incl valve.
If you just want a tank filled irrespective if its 2,5 or 6kg its still just €10  :).

He has the option to supply shiny new red alumium tanks (they are lovely and if I was starting out..) but the valve into the tank itself is straight rather than tapered and is more expensive at 32 euro. A full new shiny red aluminium tank filled will set you back €80.
Remember to quote NHC!

Ps I cleaned him out of steel ones before I left ;)

I believe a certain treasurer and a "Welsh git you know " have a number of mixed gas bottles that just need re-valving to suit CO2.

( A mixed gas bottle is tested to a higher pressure than the CO2 bottles, but having said that a lot of CO2 bottles are indeed mixed gas bottles originally but fitted with a CO2 valve

It's the same price unfortunately so 30 for the valve and a tenner to fill it, the tank is free, hence unless you specifically want a small one 5kgs is your best bet

Was out with them a couple of weeks ago to pick up a new valve & (used) tank. They had the valves in at that time.

Give them a buzz before you travel to confirm. Make sure you say it's for homebrew to get best price. Decent guys out there.

Just been down for another refill. Still €10 for 6 kg of CO2. Last one lasted me 16 months serving 33 brews.

Had a bit of trouble finding it first time I visited so noted down GPS coords this time to save somebody else the hassle.

They are: N 53° 12.663', W 06° 06.748'

Was in with AJ Edge yesterday, because of STG and the cost of the valves the price on 5 or 6kgs tanks is now €45, which includes the €10 worth of gas.

The €10 for the gas fill still represents good value for money. Important you mention you are from the NHC as they have regular joes and commercial fellas showing up paying a lot more than that.

Not sure if a mod wants to edit Jimmy's first post?

How big are the 5-6Kgs Tanks? Would they be a bit big for an under the counter fridge? Or would it be best to get a smaller sized tank?

Here's one I got two weeks ago, it's about the same height as a corny so it will fit in an under counter fridge

Can you get smaller sizes? The fridge I have has a bit of a shelf at the back so if I end up getting 2 Cornys for it in the future the gas tank will need to be a bit small than a corny to fit in.

you don't need to put your tank in the fridge either

How long would a 2KG tank last? Yeah I have seen you can keep it outside the fridge but im in enough trouble with having a Fridge lying around with the other half that I might be killed with a CO2 tank sitting next to it! :)

Where's the €50 for next fill coming from? £20/€26 for the refill, £30/€38 incl. delivery.  I tried to contact Dixon Gas before and didn't get a reply from them.  The issue is getting stock onto the island of Ireland, as regular couriers won't touch gas when it comes to overseas delivery.

Mixed gas is not like CO2. That liquifies so 5 Kgs of CO2 converts into a huge amount of CO2.

Mixed gas is just compressed so a 10 litre tank filled to 220 bar equals 2,200 litres.

So that is what is in the tank!

I asked them for a price for a new co2 tank but they said they wouldn't have new tanks for a few weeks. Didn't say what the price would be.

For those interested a new 5kg tank in AJ  was €45.
Refills still 10

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone is planning on heading out there from the Dublin side soon?
I'm looking to get a co2 tank (in around 5kg) but I'm actually based in Tipperary and work standard days so would never get there.

I have a few mates based in Dublin that could bring it down to me at the weekend if someone could get it that far and I'd sort them out no problem.

Thanks.

You could contact these either, might be easier to get to, based in tallaght.
They didn't have any tanks when I was looking but they said they would be getting some in. Don't know what price but their refills are €8.

I messaged those guys. They said they did refills but not tanks. Didn't give me the impression that they planned on doing tanks at any stage.

Popped out to KSS today. Much handier location than Bray and a bit cheaper alright - €8 for 5kg. Just be careful if you have a 6kg tank like myself though as your man was trying to charge me €23 for two kegs. Basically the extra kg on one of kegs was pushing the price to €15 for the keg, so i just asked for the 5 kg.

I know they (& the industry) ran out last summer for a short while.

I wonder if now it's due to COVID sourcing shortages.

I'll give them a call on Monday to check (they close at 3 on a Fri)

I'm just off the phone with them. Sounds like they don't have new cylinders but they are doing refills. Usual rules apply, don't come down late while they are closing up shop. Give a buzz in advance to be safe.

Hi,

Im fairly new to homebrewing but have decided to give kegging a go.
I picked up a 2nd-hand corny keg and now I'm looking for a CO2 cylinder.

If I want to get a 5kg cylinder, what should I ask AJ Edge for?

They will sell you a cylinder for €50.

Do they also stock regulators?

I have one that works with sodastream cylinders, but I assuming a real cylinder will need a different regulator?

Not sure if they stock regulators but here is one I ordered recently and I use it with a cylinder I got from AJ edge https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B083199459?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

Quote from: patk46 on April 29, 2021, 10:05:29 PMI've everything ready now to keg except gas and had a few queries about getting some.

- are they allowed sell the extinguishers for beer use? Like can you walk in and ask for it for that reason or do you need to pretend it's for something else?

- if the above is ok, do you need to bring a regulator or is it something that can be fitted yourself after once you see what size the fitting is? I have a regulator but I've no idea if it will fit a fire extinguisher.

- what's the biggest one that can be got? So as not to have to keep making trips back to them.

Thanks.

Hey,

Yeah it's fine. AJ sells canisters and refills just say you need gas.
No need to bring your regulator as its a standard size fitting.
I am not sure about sizes, I think it might be 2.5kg or 5kg

if you are concerned about repeat trips, seriously think about getting a second cylinder. If you drain your tank with an overnight leak, at least you have a backup, and are only out the price of a refill.

It is also very practical to have a second cylinder, so that you dont have to pull apart your kegerator in order to do brewery tasks like purge kegs, transfers etc.

Kinda wishing I am following my advice right now ... CO2 bottle just kicked. Now on sodastream life support (but at least the brown ale is tasting good).

Need to do closed transfers from FV. I guess I am going to have to use a (just kicked) keg as a CO2 source.

Post by: TheSumOfAllBeers on May 06, 2021, 08:51:38 AM
Fishing the big cylinder out of the keezer and taking it apart from the gas distribution is a faff. It's doable, and not too hard to shift around when it's free. It's a lot lighter than a full 19L corny keg for instance. And way lighter than a pub gas bottle.

But if you want to use your second keg for more portable procedures like you say, bringing it into the kitchen to purge kegs, or out to the garden for the BBQ, or any number of other brewhouse (as opposed to dispense) tasks, the smaller size might be a benefit.

€30 for a 6Kg fill.

Sign up with the Rebel Brewers too - very active at the minute, especially with group buys, Cork area express etc.
