Look forward to this

Couple of questions if that's OK - Are all subsections of categories 13 and 16 allowed? What's the limit of entries per person?

Thanks

I'll come back on the first part

on the entries limit, I'd say at the very least don't be competing against yourself is a good guide, but I don't really foresee a need to limit entries at all

What's the idea behind not allowing fliptop bottles?

I can't answer most of your questions, but I believe the competition is going ahead! Des was going to check what's wrong with the registration site.

It's very normal to not allow Flip-top bottles in comps. They don't fit in normal beer crates

It is in the nationals but we ain't talking crate quantities here.

Most clubs that have run a competition have tended to run with same rules, means that everyone is used to it & just use single bottle type/size for all comps.

I never seen the point myself, sure for the nationals that makes sense but not for the club comps. We've ran our competitions with no restrictions on bottles (Midlands BTW) and never had any issue and indeed nobody has every brought it up

Even with a small 40 entry comp that's 80 bottles and 8 crates stacked in a commercial venue/pub fridge.
In the standard crates they just stand over the height  and I remember in 14 and 15 nationals (400 entries) flip tops were popped off in handling but quickly resealed.

More critically they can be easily identified if there are only a few of them in a comp which is unfair to judges and other entrants.

The big comps in the US specify the bottle style and in Sweden in some comps all have to come from the same source!
To me that makes a lot of sense as it's only the beer that is the differentiator.

For big flip top users I don't see the problem to be honest if you think they are good enough for comps to cap a few

For niche big beer or small comps I'd accept anything though.

Can you clarify the various dates for this. Seems to be different dates for registration closing dates on this thread and on the competition website which would affect the drop off dates too

Has somebody agreed to take them as it's nothing to do with the organisers of Brewcon?

I'm taking it as drop off closes at Brewcon?

Some clarification at this point would be appreciated lads, thanks.

I'll take entires at BrewCon, but I'll be carrying them home in a bag, and not guaranteeing fridge storage until the comp.

I'll take drop offs to my house whenever, up to the weekend before the comp, if you can organise via your local rep that would be great.

If those reasons aren't enough, how about "practice"?

Every year the bottle requirements are the same for Nationals:

... and every year we disqualify entries for not following them.

The more people see these, the better they'll remember them.

We won't be dropping entries off at Brewcon so, we'll get them to you another way.  It'd be a disservice to the time and effort put in by entrants to have their entries carried around in a bag and stored warm.

I can take in any North county drop offs and arrange something with Des as I'm not too far from him. Actually aren't you technically in the north county Des?   :P

I can collect for anyone in Co Meath, I'm also working in Ballycoolin D11 if that suits anyone to drop beers for the comp.

I forgot to leave me bottles with capital brewers yesterday in Rascals.
I remembered when city centre and left these in Sweetmans.
Could someone collect for me please?
The bottles are in Adams Cubby.
Let me know please.
I can pay Revolut or PayPal.
Thanks

I'm not around on Sunday but I have said it to the rest of GCB to see if anyone is available to help.

I'm having difficulty getting the Garden County entries collected, there was an arrangement in place from Capital to collect them from me but communication seems to have ceased so now we are at a loss as to what is happening.  Can someone give us an update please as the competiton is in 3 days, thanks.

Not from the horses mouth, but rather from the @CapitalBrewers twitter feed:

"Hey everyone. Due to logistical reasons we need to move the Dark Ales comp out by a week. New date tba"

I'm sure they'll update when everything's confirmed.

Might be a daft question but can anyone be a judge?
Title: Re: Capital Brewers Stout & Dark Ale Homebrew competition
Post by: CH on October 26, 2019, 07:44:56 PM
Anyone can be a judge and we actively encourage novice judges in GCB comps with one prerequisite, they are paired with strong BJCP judges if they are new to it.
Also our newbie judges have done a bit of stewarding and we actively get them to taste a beer post scoring to see if they pick up the same issues as the judges and also the amazing beers.
Not a good idea to have novice judges together for the quality/consistency of the comp and outa respect for entrants.
The most important element of any judging is not the spotting of off flavours but the advice to the entrant.
Commercial brewery judges are the absolute worst for this

Best example I saw of quality judging recently was my GCB entries where I couldn't of been arsed to weigh out the minerals and didn't use them. I scored two 32 pointers and the comment was they were ok, no flaws just ok, but amazingly Andrew(BeoirFinder) picked up the fact that my soft well water wasn't treated.
Now that's quality judging. I haven't told him yet either, he'd never get his head through the door and every time I've seen him since all I hear in my head is,
"Now that's some quality H2O"

Ah, ok. Cool. I would love to give it a try sometime. Been homebrewing for well over 5 years now and have found myself being super critical when it comes to all beers. Done my fair share of geeking up too by reading lots of brewing books. I think it would be a really interesting, thought provoking and probably eye opening experience that could only help me become a better brewer.

100% Have you done any stewarding at all? Really is best place to start to get your name out there so if not deffo put your name down for this one or the Nationals as well.
Title: Re: Capital Brewers Stout & Dark Ale Homebrew competition
Post by: phildo79 on October 28, 2019, 12:32:50 PM
Never done any stewarding. I'll have to try and make it to one of the events. Or at the very least, enter a beer. Are they held in various locations or just Dublin?

Presuming that the boil water notice also rendered all forms of communication moot from the competition secretary & the social media secretary and any of the organisers, the results from the Capital twitter account suggest it went ahead.

1st. Foreign Extra Stout, Colin Bolton (Garden County Brewers)
2nd. English Porter, Richard Lubell (Capital Brewers)
3rd. Tropical Stout, Colin Bolton (Garden County Brewers)
HM. English Porter, Jonathan Cheech (Capital Brewers)

Lads if you are struggling I can scan sheets or help out to get this across the finish line, was it BJCP registered as it's important to write the report in a timely fashion otherwise that will reflect badly on the NHC and the judges I'm sure will want their points?
