Title: Dried Lager Yeast recommendation
Post by: Andy Q on June 15, 2017, 01:35:43 PM
Hi All,

With the recent temperature soar, have pulled the finger out and bought an inkbird temperature controller, and am no about to brew my first lager, problem is that all the usual suppliers I use seem to be out of S34/70, which seems to be the most popular dried yeast strain by a mile.

Other notable options seem to be S-23, S-189 & M76 from MJ's,

Anybody got anything good or bad to say about options above? or an alternative,

regards,

Hey Andy,

I recently did a Pilsner using S34/70. I fermented it at 9C for 2 weeks and had no trouble with it. It attenuated very well. It was my first lager so I don't have any other experience with the alternatives that you posted.

HTH,

Mick

S34/70 is a good yeast. It can handle higher temps than S23 if I can recall. the MJ Bohemian lager yeast is a good all rounder. Never had any issues with it

I heard a rumor most of the national lager gold medals in past years were brewed with Mauribrew lager yeast
