When hops arrive vacuum packed, are they fine to store at room temperature, or is it still best to freeze them? Normally, I have them at room temperature and freeze any leftovers after opening. Just wondering what the thinking is on this? Cheers.

Think of them as vegetable matter, freeze them.

Beerbuddha

As I have C02 I put them into storage bottles....purge bottle and hops with C02 and place me into freezer.
Slows the oxygenation process or keeps me fresher longer same thing.

Cheers both. In the freezer they go so.

Definitely freeze them and remove as much air from the package before doing so as possible. At some point buy a vac packer, great for packing hops and other items. Keep an eye in LIDL or the Andrew James from Amazon is a good reliable machine.

I have an Andrew James one. Works great but the clips to hold it down broke off after a free months. Would still buy another one!

if they are in a vac pack would they not stay fresh anyways
Never look down on people only when you are helping them up

They will stay fresh for a time, but of you plan longer term storage, then either fridge or freezer.

JDC

Cheers all.  I was with ipa-drinker on this one and thought that the vacuum packing would suffice until opened, so info. good to know.  Will be keeping all hops (vacuum packed or not) in the freezer going forward.

Hoping some day to be on here answering questions, but for now I'll stick to the asking.  ;)

Is there anywhere to get the Andrew James one in Ireland or will I have to use Amazon and parcel motel?

Leann ull

Mine came through parcel motel

Is one I have and 2 of them were used to bag 100kgs of hops into 250g bags years ago
It's solid but if you are going to only use it occasionally look elsewhere
I use it for sous vide cooking an odd time and turns steak into tender pieces you could eat with spoon

cunnol

I've been contemplating using my peco boiler plus craft beer pi as a jury rigged sous vide. Ziploc bags in place of vacuum packing, a cheap and potentially shite option

WaterWolf

Do you think the home brew shops store their vacuum packed hops in freezers too? There's less point in us doing so if they've been sitting on a shelf in a warehouse for a year!
