Title: Low OG 1.032
Post by: jackflash on January 11, 2015, 03:15:04 PM
Did american pale ale brew today of this http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=8573.0

I changed it slightly to add half the DME at the end.

Boil volume was 6 gallon which boiled down to 5.2 gallon.

Cooled and checked og it was 1.032.

Is there a good way that I can bring.this up? I'd like the alcohol content to be above 4.5

for 2kg of dme the OG was spot on.
when it was added wont affect the gravity but can impact the hop utilisation but probably not by too much.
hard to say exactly what you would need for a 4.5% beer as that also depends on the FG but you would be looking at using around 2.6kg of dme at the start (or adding another .5kg disolved/sterile dme or sugar to the fermenter)

Cool. Sounds like a plan. How much water should I devolve in?

just enough to disolve it. boil it for 5-10mins, careful it does not burn, let it cool then pour it in
if its already fermenting then dme you can do it at any point but if its sugar wait until the krausen starts to die down before adding it to make sure the yeast dont focus on the easy sugars.
also pour it in carefully, you dont want to splash it

Cool. Did as suggested. I gave the wort a gentle stir to mix in the additional wort. Took a reading 1.036. Is this enough or still too low?

This link is a handy wee tool to help you work out how much DME or LME you need to hit your target OG and likely FG for your required ABV.

Also I find that a lot of fermenter shaking is needed to make sure you aerate your wort enough to get an accurate hydrometer reading.
