Title: Style of Beer for the MAY meet
Post by: Blueshed on March 09, 2013, 12:33:59 PM
how about we pick a style of beer to brew for the May get together.
we could compare them and even score them etc.
also we could be even thinking of what style for June and July.

what kits scored high in the competion, we could pick one of them.
Does the cider need a few months in the bottle before it's ready for drinking, if so then we could pick cider for the July or August meet and hope the sun is out that day  8-)

I'll be doing a wheat beer kit hack the next week or so if anyone fancies that?

A nice beer for some sunny bbq sipping  8-)

I presume selecting a style doesn't mean we're limiting to that style. Or does it?

I think the one style is a great idea. I try to stick to a brewing calendar which is laid out for when to brew the stuff you like to drink according to season.

Feel free to download mine and see what would suit the meet if it's going that way.

More time should also be taken to properly discuss what is going on in the beers and how to help one another brew better stuff. Should be our main goal for these meets really.

Wot no cider :'(

Love the idea and should be a sticky or "Styles of the month" on the calendar
At the meets then we are all tasting similar styles :)

I think it could be a great help to have a style each month. Could help people who are unfamiliar with a style and also help anyone thinking about BJCP. Like the idea of a sticky and a calendar.

Maybe start with pale ales???

Pale ale looks like the style to get started with. I'll have one or two ready for the meet.

What's important is that there's 5 minutes allocated to each beer. This needs to be properly chaired in terms of an introduction by the brewer, group tasting, marking, a Q&A and the follow up of troubleshooting which may be necessary.

Follow up should also include support from someone who's had success with the style for planning or implementation on the brewday or on packaging.

If we stick to this kind of format and help one another properly improve, we'll be miles ahead of those Shelbyville/Capital Brewers punks for our National entries next year. That or just happily gargled 12 months of the year.

Also where possible should we bring our recipes for comparison?? It is always good to know yeast, og, fg and so forth.

Sounds great, I'll chair it no problem.

I've been doing the pale ale style for abou 4 years now so should be able to help out enough too. Anyone who'd like a recipe or two to use just let me know too.

so if you don't brew a beer that fits the 'style of the month', theres no point turning up? :-?

I think the beer of the month would be an optional part to each meet but there would also be the regular bring your own beer part too.

I'd prefer a pale ale to be honest.
Wit beer I find is nicer for July or August drinking.

I think we're just trying to come up with a format where we can more easily judge quality and technique by categorising is all.
The idea at the last meet was to pick a style so that we're not really confusing the palate too much while we're going through the tastings. Jumping through styles and a range of off flavours was pretty distracting from picking out what could be fixed. Ismise brought up the idea and we thought we'd have a go. He was hoping for pointers on where to improve and didn't really come away with a-lot from it at the time. I'd say it would only take up 20 minutes of the night to do anyways. There'll be more than pale ales drank on the night I'd say.

I think i'm sucking diesel... alhough i didnt read that in my feedback sheets.... I really like the Calendar idea Alex, never a dry throat in the house.
A "themed beer" sounds a great idea, especially if we take the time to taste flavours and match against the BJCP style guidelines, start looking at what additions/tweeking etc helps to make or enhance a good beer in particualr styles, as well as trouble-shooting when things go wrong. I'm up for that.
Also, timing of each tasting, including feedback, should help. Would be great to taste differences between kits, extracts, and AG.
On another note, I don't see the attraction of 2-year old monkeys butts... sorry Dempsey  :-*

Pale Ale sounds grand. Plenty of time to get one together and even have a few commercial examples in the West County to compare against.
Will bring my notepad. Everybody bring their recipes and we'll do this somewhat scientifically. This could get very nerdy! (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/smiley_faces/nerd-smiley-face.gif) (http://emoticoner.com)
