Title: Kit beer yeast
Post by: LordEoin on July 25, 2015, 12:24:41 PM
I wanted to test the general knowledge "fact" that kit beer yeast is the source of funky flavors.
So I used a spare pack of yeast that I subbed out of a Coopers kit. It's been sat around for about a year, like many kit beer yeasts do.
It was from the Wheat Beer kit, which is their A yeast.
The beer was brewed as part of a 200L batch with the rebel brewers on the pilot setup in Black's of Kinsale
I fermented the beer at 18C for 2 weeks, kegged and force carbed.
It fermented out very well, with no hint of 'kit' about it. I'd compare it to US05 in attenuation and flocculation and I suspect that's what it is.
maybe some other kit yeasts might cause off flavors, but not this one anyway

Kit makers tend to be stingy with their yeast too, and pitching it dry may be a greater source of yeast stress.

I pitched the same amount and method as if it was a kit
