You could preboil in a big saucepan.

Or buy a bigger boat.  :P

When mine just start boiling I move them to the side so that the heat is limited to a small area.
It seems to make some nice turbulance up one side and down the other, pulling a lot of the foam down with it.

Still happens with 2l in the 5 litre boat :)
Sometimes the simplest ideas work best so trying that side boil idea next time cheers

I just do mine in a big saucepan and then transfer to the erlenmeyer for the stirplate. Just walk away for 10 minutes and it takes care of itself. Famous last words ;)
Also, you've covered it. I've tried a covered boil before and it goes crazy.

I've tried that "walking away" from the saucepan and had a boil over in seconds!
I just turn the heat down once its got up to boiling point so its just boiling, not a vigorous boil, then its normally fine.

This is interesting, I was just reading in Randy Mosher's book about this. He suggests there's evidence that rehydrating in malt extract "can even be harmful" and you should just use water. He doesn't go much further than that so far as I've read anyway. Given the book is 10 years old now has this been debunked in the meantime?

Rehydrating dried yeast yep thats probably true, there is twice the amount of dried yeast required in the average packet (Not lager) along with enough food to get them going, these are liquid yeasts and need to be fed to multiply.

Ah right, I'm with ya.

When the conical flasks come out I get scared and hide my head in the sand... :-[
