Title: Kettle Leads?
Post by: Saruman (Reuben Gray) on August 06, 2015, 12:02:16 PM
Where in 2015 are people getting their kettle leads? By kettle leads, I mean the ones designed for kettles with a  C15 end and designed for high temp use. Not a computer lead of which I have access to hundreds.

Any shops doing them for a decent price? I use HBC for a lot of thins but I can't justify paying their price for a power cable.

I could order them from here (http://www.lindy.ie/cables-adapters-c1/power-c136/iec-mains-cables-c137/2m-mains-power-cable-uk-3-pin-plug-to-iec-c15-hot-conditioned-black-p6671) but I'm wondering if there are any shops selling for a similar price?

I got mine in a diy shop in Mary St if that helps. I'd say most diy shops would sell them

Lenehan's on Capel Street do them, bit more expensive than your link though and a shorter lead. http://www.lenehans.ie/euro-1mtr-lead-plug-black.html#product_tabs_review_tabbed

I figured they might do yes. Those are too short, I would rather a direct to plug scenario rather than having to use an extension lead.
Might just be easier to use my link, I have just never used them before.

You can buy the sockets and make your own cables?

From China (http://www.ebay.ie/itm/1xPCS-IEC-C15-rewirable-connector-IEC-320-C15-plug-male-C15-socket-/260961963298) or Maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/maplin-10a-hot-condition-euro-line-socket-n08kc).

Yeah I know but sometimes it's nice to buy something pre-made.
Electrical cables for a kettle are one I would prefer is made by someone other than me.

I meant more of a local, typically cluttered type of diy shop

Yeah maybe yes. I was hoping for something along the lines of "I popped in to **** the other week and picked one up for €4".

Might be easier to order since I live in Westmeath and work in Dublin so never have time to just pop in to town. Unless there's somewhere in Blanch perhaps.
I might try the electrical wholesaler that I got my SWA cable from.

You could try some music shops.
The leads for guitar amps are the same, and some amplifiers are as highly rated as a kettle, so the thermal load rating for the cables would be the same i imagine.

Charlie shiels sells them but as they are for kettles so tend to be short leads, they don't have elements anymore, ring in advance to ensure stock

You could try Radionics in Rialto they list c15 connector with 2 meter leads

Or as you suggest an electrical wholesaler eg Michael Garry in Finglas carry a large range of stock and may have some in stock

You can't use computet leads? Good to know! Spotted some in my local hardware store the other day (Keeleys in Roundwood - fantastic place), didn't see how much they were though

Standard computer leads are not rated for a high enough amperage. The fuse is often not even high enough so they will not work. Replacing the fuse with a higher capacity one might work but then the cable isn't rated for that heat. Also, proper kettles have a notch that computer cables don't. Some cut a notch but again, it's all bypassing safety features that are there for a reason.
For the sake of a few euro, it's best to have a proper cable. They just aren't as easy to get as a computer cable.

Sorry forgot to add that Radionics have a walk-in trade counter, they may have a minimum spend limit though, best to phone first before you visit.

And when you do call in to their walk in shop don't go to the guy with the diy face because if you do and ask him a question he will hand you the LARGE catalogue and say diy >:(

I just went ahead and ordered from the link I originally posted. I just don't have the time to get to any DIY shop that's likely to have them.

Jaysus I was going to buy off that link just there too but the postage is so steep - and they doubled it cos I wanted two leads! I'll go to my local instead
