Think I might just have time for a wee Landlord. If I start this Tuesday it should be ready.
I came back to the homeland for the weekend to see the folks and my dad revealed that he had two of my bitters still out in the garage. They must've been in the bottle three months. The bitterness seemed to improve but it completely lost it's head. I was expecting the complete opposite!
How did the TTL go Roo?
Anyone else quintessentially brewing yet?
Starting the second of my two entries next week.
Even more reasons to brew :)
PLENTY OF TIME LEFT FOLKS, SO C'MON; GET BREWING!!!!!
-Barry
we arer on de case ;)
Planning one as well.
As am I ;)
I have 2
Class, lads. Great to see.
We've a few in the pipeline this side of the border too so looks like we're picking up momentum.
What people won't do for a night out in Belfast ;)
Cheers,
-Barry

Lapped out of the TTL and went for a Taddy Porter instead. Bubbling away like a legend in my new stainless steel fermenter.

I sold up my boiler and home made mash tun with wort chiller and spent the money on a Grainfather fermenter to compliment the Grainfather brewing system.

Hope I get to try this! Taddy porter is a great beer!

I have 2
These 2 and the friggin Smithwicks entry nearly caused me a divorce today as I was brewing for 9 hours.

:) planning a porter and maybe a special bitter of some sort if there's time to do both this weekend. If it's only one then the porter wins.
I can't see them picking a dark beer as the winner.
I reckon they will want to avoid any confusion with another dark Irish beers.
Just my thoughts.

Interesting point but the best beer on the day will win regardless so get brewing something special!
Here's the Taddy in my wee shiney thing
Lovely and shiney! :)
Been contacted re. stronger beers in 330ml bottles and we're happy to accept entries for category 17 in 330ml bottles.
Still plenty of time to get brewing! A nice wee bitter or porter could be ready in 3 weeks. It's also likely that they won't be going into cold storage immediately so will still be time for bottle priming!
Ok guys. I was up to some secret, quintessential goings on over the weekend?
Doh! It's not a secret anymore. What do ya mean - Twitter's not private?
Who else is secretly brewing behind closed doors?
Have a best bitter and a porter on the go at the moment!
Have a beer which could either go Brown or Porter so will probably enter as both!
Two ESBs in the go. One bottl conditioning and the other is getting bottled this weekend!
That's me Taddy bottled tonight.
Great stuff! How's it tasting?

Dare I say......like a winner?
Just kegged the second of my two entries last night. Hoping the knowledge that I'm taking part doesn't dishearten other potential entrants. Come on folks; it's still worth a punt. Consolation prizes are still prizes :)

If you are entering under 13C I might have to bow out in that case.

I'm away home to pour all mine down the drain.
Sarky feckers :)
First taste of victory tomorrow night when I crack open the first from the (no) competition batch! Yeo!
:)
Would an English IPA qualify for this?

How's it all going then? The lack of posting has me concerned. All the eager beavers working away. My taste test is due this week. That'll determine whether I put it up for scrutiny. I think I can cope with being second behind Bazza.
Mine _should_ be ok, pending a taste test at the next club meet when I hand it in. Don't want to send something that's not up to standard.
Bottling this week hopefully!
There was a bit of quintessential-ing going on yesterday. Brewed this best bitter and bottled a porter. Hopefully they pass the taste test.
Where is the drop off point for entries?
I'll be one of the Belfast drop off points. Just PM me for details when ready.
-Barry
Nice one Bazza
Well that's my entries bottled, just need to leave it to carbonate while I head off to sunny Spain :-)
I have just checked my bottles. No head retention. Hardly worth entering now. FFS!
any Dublin drop off points yet?
There is a fucking echo in here now ;)
Ok where's that thread about the drop points?
Edit Ah here did you look under comp thread, don't be annoying them in their back yard here, this is a national event :P
Ok
Gonna collect yours can you pm me with a mobile and daytime location it can be collected from, cheers
What a really nice bunch of lads there are in Belfast and bang on with their ability to pick up faults in a beer, and weren't we so lucky that Wetherspoons had plenty of beers with loads of off flavours for the guys to practice on, the metallic was my favourite ;)

Thanks again for coming to see us! Was really helpful going through it all.
Shaping up nicely!
Looking class! So clear. Did you crash cool?
Careful Andy. You'll have none left for the competition ;)
Aye. Looking fine. Clear as a bell.
BTW, to the rest of you, don't forget to PM me for collection. It's almost upon us.
-Barry
Collections being made at apple juice drops please make sure your beers are with Club Reps!
God Damn you Quietman I had to get out the fish bladders last night after seeing that bad boy.
Any chance you could start a thread with tips as to how you got it that good?
Wish I knew guys! Nothing any different from my usual (ahem - high standard) process.
Bit of Irish Moss 10 mins from end of boil. Racked to secondary with primer the night before bottling. Left to condition in garage.
No animal products or deliberate cold crashing involved.
Don't worry Bazza - plenty left for the celebrations!
I suppose you've been practicing your acceptance speech in front of the mirror :P
- Barry
Well that's my entries in! Thanks again, Bazza.
The Great Quintessential English Ales Competition is nearly upon us!
Tomorrow, Saturday 28 November, at The Errigle, Ormeau Rd, Belfast.
Why don't you call in and say hello, maybe stay a while, take a load off.
I'm in England sadly but good luck for tomorrow! I'm sure it'll be a cracker.
Looking forward to the updates.
Sorry I couldn't make it up there.
Good luck to everyone who entered.
Cheers,
- Barry
Best of luck to all the brewers
Good luck everyone! :)
Anyone calling in we're in the Marble Suite
