Title: HBW malt trial
Post by: Drum on September 18, 2015, 08:42:53 PM
HBW have kindly offered to give out 25 KG bags of some of their new malts to clubs so that we can try them and give some feedback on what they're like.
I have secured a bag of Best malz pale ale malt for Rebel brewers to try out, details here http://www.homebrewwest.ie/best-pale-ale-malt-50-to-70-ebc-25-kg-5604-p.asp (http://www.homebrewwest.ie/best-pale-ale-malt-50-to-70-ebc-25-kg-5604-p.asp)

The malt is being donated on the grounds that;

  *  This trial is for feedback on the two malts that HBW are sponsoring.
  *  Each bag should be split up amongst the club in ~5kg lots, to allow a few members to try it out.
  * 2 simple feedback reviews are required per bag of malt that you receive, e.g. how efficient the mash was? OG vs other malts, what did it taste like?, would you use it again?, etc
  * Full memers only. See original thread here http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/index.php/topic,10664.15.html (http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/index.php/topic,10664.15.html)

So hands up, who wants 5KG of free malt to brew and review?  remember theres only 5 X 5KG lots.

Also, I wont be putting in the order for this until wednesday/thursday next week so delivery will be after that..

I have to put in an order with HBW to get the malt delivered.  If anyone wants to piggyback a small order from HBW and save yourself a few quid on delivery charges let me know and I'll add it to the order. Please dont take the p!$$ and ask me to put a ton of grain in the car, but i can handle a few bags of hops or yeast or whatever.

No worries.
I can hold the last 5kg as I'm pretty central in the City (Penrose Quay)

So I have all the grain, what's the best way to divide it up, I don't think I have any food grade bags big enough for 5kgs.

Old grain sacks. Carrier bags.
You only need 4. Food grade won't be an issue as it's dry.

Right it's all divided up, smells really nice. Now to decide what best to brew with it.

I think I'm going to do a cascade smash with the malt, found a packet of 2013 cascade. It should give a good idea of the malt, i tried making a profile for the malt on bersmith but im not sure if I've entered all the numbers correctly. These are the figures I've come up with from here, http://www.bestmalz.de/en/malt/EN_BEST_PaleAle.pdf (http://www.bestmalz.de/en/malt/EN_BEST_PaleAle.pdf)

Name: Best Pale Ale Malt
Type: Grain
Origin: Germany
Supplier: Best Malz

Yield: 78.26 %
Potential: 1.036
Color: 6.0 EBC
Max in Batch: 100.0 %
Moisture: 5.00 %
Protein: 10.5 %
Coarse Fine Difference: 2.00 %
Diastatic Power: 76.0 %

Recommend Mash: TRUE
Inventory: 5.00 kg
Notes:

Created with BeerSmith 2 - http://www.beersmith.com

Does this look right, I averaged the colour but for others I used the max figures.

How have you stored the cascade, there will be very little left in that if it's a 2 years old

It's been in the freezer unopened since I bought it in May of last year at around -7. Putting it through the beersmith hop aging, its telling me they've gone from 7.9% to 5.9%.

I did not see that at all, most of my figures were close except for diastatic power. I calculated it at 76 and beersmith says it's 200.
I used the 250WK best malz give on their spec sheet and used this formula

so L = (250+16)/3.5 = 76 , am I wrong somewhere?
