HBW have kindly offered to give out 25 KG bags of some of their new malts to clubs so that we can try them and give some feedback on what they're like.
I have secured a bag of Viking pilsner malt for the North County brewers to try out.
The malt is being donated on the grounds that;
* This trial is for feedback on the two malts that HBW are sponsoring.
* Each bag should be split up amongst the club in ~5kg lots, to allow a few members to try it out.
* 2 simple feedback reviews are required per bag of malt that you receive, e.g. how efficient the mash was? OG vs other malts, what did it taste like?, would you use it again?, etc
* Full members only. See original thread here http://www.nationalhomebrewclub.ie/forum/index.php/topic,10664.15.html
So hands up, who wants 5KG of free pale malt to brew and review? remember theres only 5 X 5KG lots.

Cool, that's the 5. I'll order the bag later this week, as I'm away for a few days and can't take delivery until I get back.
Ordered, so hope to have before the next meet. Will try to drop it out at the same time Will is divvying up his bag, so as to save bringing the car to multiple meets. Like to actually have a drink once in a while :)
I made a Kolsch out of mine using just this grain
Got 24 litres of 1.055 wort out of 5Kg (83% which I always get)
I've never done an all Pilsner wort before and was surprised how clear the wort came out and how fermentable it was. Dropped down to 1.004 in 10 days (66.5c mash, 4 to 1 mash ratio, 1.8L wlp029 starter)
Edit: Just realised my "Kolsch" is going to be 6.7%. Imperial Kolsch?

Beer is crashing now.
Cool. Lads, any chance of some more feedback on the Viking pilsner malt? Thanks.

I should have one up in December or early January. Did the pale malt already and put it in the other thread.
Sorry late getting back brian.
I did an raspberry saison recipe that I have brewed before. 90% pilsner and 10% sugar. Efficiency 72% last time i brewed this with 1.084 SG and 1.020 FG mashed at 70oc. This time my efficiency was 76% as the SG was 1.088.
72% is my usual efficiency.
Excellent, this is consistent with what we found. Thanks.
Just did a schwarzbier with 50/50 this and Munich malt. Got 75% efficiency and a nice lauter, so it's no better or worse then the usual pilsner I've used in the past. Will report back if there are any unusual flavours when the beer is ready that are malt derived, but I don't expect any issues.
