Title: Magnetic stir plate
Post by: Beerbuddha on September 22, 2015, 03:32:37 PM
Hi all,

I'm looking for a stir plate that will work up to 5L starter if needed.

Ant recommendations ?
Cheers BB

Diy works well. I've a cheap ass from MBW, my homemade is as good.

I have a small diy stir plate but if I go bigger than litre it doesn't make any kinda vortex just agitated the yeast which is all I need but it just lacks power...bit flimsy and magnet does tend to move off centre causing magnet to just sit there.

Just time for an upgrade.

I was looking at one of those Maelstrom yeast stirrers but don't deliver outside USA and probably 110 volt anyways.

I bought one of these a few months back, great bit of kit. I haven't made a 5L starter with it but they claim it handles up to 5L.

That's spot on..... good price also.  Best so far as most I have looked at are like 200+ and have heating which I don't need.  :)

You dont need to have a vortex.
You just need to agitate the yeast. If you have too much of a vortex its like a centrifuge forcing the yeast out to the side. (I was talking to a microbiologist when i was making my stir plate).

Aye by all accounts spinning too fast can cause shear and damage the yeast, so just keep it agitated.

I got one of the stirplates linked above and it's just the business. Faultless in operation.

Ok i have cash to burn and i'm just talking myself into excuse to upgrade  :D
I know you don't need a vortex but i guess if you can cause a vortex in large 5L starter it just means the unit has a bit of power and will last years needed.

As other have said a gentle stir not a beating  :D
I use a computer fan for 5 litres and using a variable power controller or sliding power socket which does the job, the trick is always finding that point where the yeast is just in suspension but not getting thrashed

all the techys in the club, I would have thought this would be such a simple thing to make, is it not  just a computer fan in a box with a variable resister..@

total cost fan 5 euros, junction box 5 euros, variable resistor 2 euros.

I dont use one so cant comment and never tried making one coz if its that simple to make I might start putting a few together :) I think I recall dempsey or partrige had a home made one

Spacing is important of the magnets and distance and can be fiddly to get right at the start
I just use one of these

Anyway shouldn't derail BB's thread with DIY we are here to spend his money  ;D

I made one with all the above bits and and used a cigar box for the housing. I gave up on it after coming home more than once to a starter that wasn't stirring due to inbalance of the magnet I presume. It was a pain to get started too, finding the correct location and speed to get it started was tedious. I reckon my magnet was too weak. In the end I splashed out on the digital stirrer and I have no regrets. If I had just bought it in the first place it would of saved me hours of my time which is worth the outlay IMHO.

Yeah I love DIY, but when there's calibration involved, it's just worth a little extra money if you can set and forget. With mine, I put the magnet into the flask, put it on the base and turn it on. Magnet always locks in first time and never has a hickup.
I've used other people's DIY jobbies before and it was always so damn fiddly to get the magnet locked in and started without skipping around.

Here it is with a 5L flask: https://youtu.be/UsD-8G7yvzA?t=185

my first one was 45 bucks from the us when the dollar was 1.45 and I really like the look of that but i'll stick with the computer fans and variable voltage :)  anyone want to organise a group buy?

What sort of variable controller do you use? Tried looking on ebay but all sorts of weird and wonderful things start popping up. I presume it's basically a potentiometer...? but it's been nearly 20 years since i fiddled with one of those at school and now they look strange and scary to me

Ah hang on... can you adjust the power to the fan by simply adjusting the voltage switch on this?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0083S19YW/ref=pd_cp_147_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0CPWJF1XRQVE4BGHD9DH&dpID=41s1vfDHclL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL70_SR70%2C70_

ie. When the switch is at 12V the fan's working at max and 3V it's at min?

EDIT:

Just found this thread - explains all! Thanks Ciderhead
