Second all grain batch for me Biab.
Some gunk floating in top of fermenter, I think it's ok as I'm sure I've seen it before in other batches. Anyone know what it is?

It looks like cold break material, did you just put everything from the kettle to fermenter?
Andrews correct it's cold break, be honest now how much whirlfloc did you use?
Jaysis.. looks like cauliflower.
Just break material, you'll be grand. It will just sink to the bottom of the FV.
That looks like a serious case of overdosing on your finings. As CH implied, you need to use less irish moss/whirlfloc/protofloc or whatever.
Just one whirfloc at 15 mins to go.
Overdoing it there, dosing rate is 1 tablet for 50L*.
Cut it in half for your next brew, presuming 21-23L batch.
*Doesn't help that there is variations, Whirlfloc-G & -T, so not 100% sure what versions are sold here.

Not according to the HBC's whirfloc:
"A blend of Irish Moss, bicarbonate of soda and purified Kappa carrageenan that encourages the precipitation of haze causing materials such as proteins and Beta glucans. Prepared in a quick dissolving, highly soluble tablet form. Add 1 tablet per 5 gallons with 15-20 minutes left in boil. You may never go back to plain Irish moss."
Maybe there is different strengths of tablet, as you've said. I've always used 1 per batch and never had those cauliflowers. My break is usually a bit less clumpy.
I'll be racking it to secondary anyway at some point, so I'll leave the cauliflower behind!
how is it getting from your kettle to the fermenter?

Passes through bazooka screen then through plate chiller
Did you leave it long to settle in the kettle before transferring to the FV? I've started giving it 30 mins after chilling and the clarity is a lot better since.

It's going through an external plate chiller. It might be worth leaving it 30 mins alright.

Ah yeah, you won't get the cold break until it goes through the chiller into your fermenter though. You could transfer to another vessel and leave it to settle there, then transfer to the FV. But that involves another bucket just.

Will it affect the taste/fermentation at all, or could I leave it there until ready for secondary?
It won't affect the flavour, at least I don't think so. It might affect head formation and retention though. But some brewers don't subscribe to that theory.
Just to clarify.. The head the retention is influenced by all the proteins dropping out due to large amounts of finings. It won't make much difference racking off the break now. Might affect clarity a little, but who wants clear beer eh? ;)
Ok forget what HBC say its 40-50% of a tablet no more otherwise you will have "brain" in your fermenter.

Ahha! I have a great name for it: Brainblasta...
Its HBB
Home Brewed Brains ;)
Another important point add whirlfloc with only 10 mins to go or at the same point you add your external chiller if that's what you normally use
The only problem this causes is loss of beer.
Is this the blonde ale mash kit from hbc ? I had the exact same happen when i brewed that one. It finished out really good, no complaints with it at all.
