Title: SNPA clone - stolen recipe from Shanna
Post by: oinkely on September 28, 2015, 10:17:37 AM
Hey all,

stuck this on Saturday evening.

It is a recipe posted by Shanna at some point that scored 38 in a competition.  Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was my first taste love in craft type beer so was delighted when I came across the recipe.

Coopers APA kit
cascade hops
GV12 yeast
1KG DME
250gms Carapils

Steeped 250gms carapils for 30 minutes.
Boiled the DME in about 4 litres of water and then added 25gms cascade and simmered for 10 minutes.
Strained both into the fermenter with the tin of coopers goo.
Topped up to 22 litres with cold water (was aiming for 21 but wasn't paying enough attention!)
Sprinkled the dry yeast on top at about 25 degrees.
In the basement now with the STC1000 set at 19 degrees.
Going to leave it for 2 weeks, then dry hop with another 25gm of cascade about 4 days before bottling.
OG was around 1.034

I'll report back when it is ready to go.

Cheers for sharing Shanna.

In the interest of transparency I actually got that from Bubbles who gave me the suggestions for a demonstration that I did for the NHC .

Busy Man Oinkley, Had ordred some APA recently but it was out of stock, ended up with just plain coopers real ale, which is on at the moment. Hopped a boil with williamette leftover from the lighting strike ale, will dry hop with some simcoe next week, let me know how this turns out, the APA is supposed to be one of the best for hacks seen it in loads of recepies

yeah, the APA is a great clean slate for hacking. Any flavor you introduce shines through.

dry hopped this with 25g cascade on Saturday.  It's been in the fermenter at 19 degrees for two weeks now.
planning on bottling on Tuesday evening.
looks like it will be around the 4% mark after priming.
Tasted the bit I drew off for gravity testing and it was nice, not super hopped but very pleasant.

Must give this a whirl, I like the look of it. Let us know how it goes!

Will do Kevin,

Gonna stick it on hopefully next week once the fermenter is free again

Had an early bottle of this last night (while brewing up an IPA kit hack).

Very easy to drink, still quite cloudy but it's only been in the bottle ten days or so.  Not much hop aroma but lovely flavour.

It turns out I accidently got 100g of Cascade instead of 50g...

What do ye reckon? Should I just double up on both additions or might it be better to increase one and not the other...? If I did a 75g dry hop that'd surely boost the aroma - but might it be too much...?  :-\

well, from my lot there's not much aroma so would definitely lash in some extra at dry hopping stage.  I wouldn't object to a more hoptastic experience so might consider going for double at both stages.  sure what's the worst that can happen?

Good stuff - sure I'll double up so and see how it goes! >:D

Its your beer. Experiment however you want.
If it's too hoppy leave it a few months to mellow out.

I finally got this on last night. OG 1038.

Didn't have a big enough pot for the boil so ended up boiling in 2L (which promptly boiled over and I had to pour some down the drain to make headspace... :( And the bag I had the hops in opened a bit so I'm sure some leaves ended up in the fermenter...)

Feck it sure we'll see how it goes!

I really need to buy a bigger pot

Great stuff Kevin,

It's turned out to be a lovely beer.  I had one last night while bottling my centennial APA.

I have a 10 litre pot I bought in IKEA for doing the boils and it's the best bit of kit for this sort of job.  (also handy for giant hams!)

I used pellets in my version (only ever used pellets) and strain the whole lot into the fermenter through a household sieve.

I have the bits to do this again, and as soon as the boss is out for an evening I'll be sticking it on again.

Good stuff, looking forward to tasting it. Haven't done a pale ale in ages.

I even have a sieve that I should've poured it all through but it was getting very late and my brain had clearly gone to bed already

Haven't managed to get my second batch of this on yet, but the first one is going down treat.  Gave my brother a few to try and he reckons I have peaked now and can stop brewing!  It's a gorgeous drop.

I was really happy with how this turned out. Brought it down home to Cork for Christmas and it disappeared very quickly. I'll do it again
