Title: First time cider
Post by: jackflash on October 11, 2015, 08:03:01 PM
Have a few trees in the garden so decided to build a rough and ready press out of a pallet.

All went well, juice was gorgeous SG was 1.06. I had 2 gallons so decided to top up to 5 gallons with water and added about a kilo of dextrose.

Thought this would be OK, anyone have any idea how the dextrose will affect it?

Dextrose will make it thin, apple juice would have been better

Would adding a litre or 2 of pasteurised apple juice help to add body at this stage?  I very rarely drink or haven't ever made cider so im just curious.

Well done with the DIY apple press Jack. MacGyver would be proud of you  :)

Hi, to add more body to this try adding 250g of finely diced raisins (or purée them), adding them to the primary fermentation. Also add about 1/4 teaspoon of tannin will help.  Also, next time you do a brew of apples, try using just apple/fruit juices, by adding the water this time you were just diluting the flavour.
