Title: Re: South Dublin Beer Tasting Event (List of attendees)
Post by: Bubbles on February 14, 2013, 09:48:24 PM
Great news folks,

The Dark Horse has confirmed that they will host the inaugural tasting of the South Dublin branch of the National Homebrewers Club.

I have agreed Wednesday 20th March with the manager so I hope that's plenty of notice for people. I had hoped that the tasting would be a warm-up event for the competition, but I think that might be too short notice for people. Instead, it will be an opportunity for the South Dublin homebrewers to show off their winning entries! ;)

In the meantime, get down to the Dark Horse in Blackrock and show them some support. They're owned and operated by the Galway Bay/Against the Grain folks and they've a fantastic range of craft beer in the adjoining bottle shop.

https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Dark-Horse/124395891058729

In time-honored tradition, let's start a list. Hope you can attend.
Conor.

75 will leave you close-ish, out on the dual carriageway at stillorgan or bottom on newtownparkavenue - and it goes past the top of your road.

Only problem is It goes via Donegal and Cork.
Well thats not the only problem... It doesnt actually go to your destination either :P - that might be a problem.

Yip. I'll be bringing my last two bottles of Big Dawg Imperial Amber which took a bronze medal in the Specialty category. Looking forward to getting some face to face feedback on it.

I'll be bringing a couple of my other competition beers aswell. I did a Best Bitter and a Mild and I'm particularly interested in getting more feedback on these as they didn't score as well as my other entries.

Yourself Padraic? I'd love to get a taste of that cider of yours that scored 38.

Anyone else?

Unfortunately the 38 point cider has already been claimed by swmbo so I won't have any to bring along. It was only a 5 litre batch so there wasn't much of it in the first place!

I'll probably bring along a 29 pointer, my other entries are all gone at this stage!

Only 6 on the list at the moment! There must be more southsiders out there brewing?

Ah yes, keeping SWMBO happy. Probably a better use for it in fairness.

Yes I thought we might have a few more signups at this stage. I'll post a new thread in the Capital Brewers forum. Maybe people are confused wondering wtf "Godfrey & tristan" is?!  :)

Hi there,

I will bring along a couple of bottles of the 38 point tog Sierra Nevada Pale Ale kit. I think I might have a bottle of the 26 point chocolate stout still in the fridge somewhere. The other was a 31 point Belgian Ambiorix kit but I have no bottles of this left over as its in a mini keg. Can't see the Black Horse allowing us to crack open a 5 litre job so I will try and bottle it a few hours before hand in a few swing tops. I also have two new brews (another Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone and a Boddingtons clone) Not sure how this will work out but lets give it a try as they are very new and I have learned that kits & extract brews benefit from bottle conditioning.

Hi Ciderhead,

Will you be attending the South Dublin meet on the 21st? If so any chance we can get a sample of your blonde beer? I was tempted to do this kit previously but never got around to it as any time I tried to order some it was always out of stock.

The Beoir B&C meetup is every month on the 3rd Wednesday. Would there be any merit in just adding it to the calender for the next few months? A big chunk of members on here are also on Beoir so it would kinda make sense.

I'm off to Sweden on the 21st so I've to make it an early night on the 20th anyway. Been meaning to check out the Dark Horse for a while too.

Thanks for that info irish_goat. I thought the Beoir tastings were conducted on random dates. We'll know next time we're organising something.

Tube, any chance you could put the Dark Horse event in the NHC calendar? (might be a bit pointless at this late stage..)

I did it this morning.

It's not really pointless as it goes out automatically on twitter and FB.

Excellent, cheers for that. I've just posted in the other Dublin forums too, might generate a bit more interest.

Just tidying this up a bit, so that we can put some order on the beers on the night. Not having attended one of these tastings before - I presume you'd normally leave the bigger/hoppier beers until last?

1. Conor/P Bubbles (Mild, Imperial Amber)
2. JimmyM (Bitter)
3. Shanna (Sierra Nevada Clone, Boddingtons clone)
4. Padraic (American Pale Ale)
5. Tube (Imperial IPA)
6. David
7. Andrew (Saison, Black IPA, Robust Raspberry Porter)
8. Ciderhead
9. JohnC (1.4%abv smoked wheat beer)
10. Shiny (Blonde Ale)
11. rossa

I'll bring a load of BJCP scoresheets (the short version I think) and a few flavour wheels and I'll leave it up to people whether they want to fill them out or not, no pressure.

I'll probably be in the Dark Horse over the weekend so I'll just confirm everything with the landlord.

There's a fantastic range of beers here, and some heavyweight scorers too! Shaping up to be a great event lads, really looking forward to it.

I have been to plenty of beer tastings and I have yet to see a pub not doing well out of it. I usually buy at least 3 pints so if everyone (13 and counting) was doing that they would be getting €150+ that they wouldn't be getting of a normal night.

Excellent, that's good news.

If we are to make it a regular venue for South Dublin tastings it's nice to reciprocate by giving them a bit of business.

Guys, I feel a bit guilty not bringing any brewed beer with me. But as I'm Lithuanian, I can bring few bottles of Lithuanian beer to taste for those who never tried it out. Would like to hear opinion from those who really understand what good beer is :)

Dont feel guilty Larry - its no problem whatsoever, the real benefit from these things is to get feedback for your own beer from other people, so you are doing a favor by being there to sample and give opinion.

Im not sure whether the Black Horse would appreciate us bringing in commercial beer though - it might cross a murky line. Paddy Bubbles would have to call it, but since this is the first time we've gone there for tasting its probably best to leave it.

Larry, just bring yourself along. We have a sort of un-written rule that when a pub allows us to meet there,we only bring along homebrew for tastings and then go buy some beer from the good looking wan behind the bar. :)

Might raise some eyebrows alright, best to play it safe this time and restrict it to homebrew.

Larry, as the lads have said, just bring yourself and a sharp pair of tastebuds. The Dark Horse might even sell some tasty Lithuanian beer in which case you can order a round of beers for the table...  ;) :D

Chaps, I'll have 100 BJCP scoresheets with me for anyone that wants to hone their formal tasting skills.

Would be helpful if you brought a pen with you - though I'll have a few spares with me.

If I don't get down I hope it's an enjoyable night for everyone.

Had a great night, cant wait to do it again despite the fact that the Dart security staff aren't partial to their customers drinking craft beer.  ::)

As was discussed tonight, what is the new name of the club?

Thanks for organising Paddy, err sorry Conor, Godfrey and Tristan are very much alive in SCD, I counted 17 bodies.
Cracking beers especially Rossas American Stout.
Great to see newbies like Larry as well  :)

Thank you guys for having me there. I really enjoyed tasting it. I've realized that right now I know nothing about the beer  :o ;D
Biggest impression was left by Andrew's Saison, I've never tasted anything like this. But my favorite was Conor's English Mild. And Damien's Coconut Stout was lovely too.
Great night, nice people!
I'm happy as Larry  ;D ;D

Good to hear everyone had a good time
Missed last nights tasting and now failed my exam what a bummer. I'll just have to polish off a few brews tonight to make up for it

That's alright, I've been called a lot worse.

Folks, I spoke to the manager in the Dark Horse yesterday just to check everything went according to their expectations, and he said they'd be delighted to host any future events for us.

Details of the next tasting event. Hop Madness!!  ;) :)
