Title: Mead Entries for the Nationals 2016
Post by: Bubbles on November 05, 2015, 09:07:04 AM
Hi all,

Just starting a thread where people can indicate their intention to enter mead in next year's national competition.

If possible, can you also consult the BJCP mead guidelines below and specify the variety of mead you're entering as it might influence how the judges are assigned.

INTRODUCTION (Explains 24 - 26) (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/meadintro.php)
24. TRADITIONAL MEAD (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style24.php)
25. MELOMEL (FRUIT MEAD) (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style25.php)
26. OTHER MEAD (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style26.php)

Please comment below if you plan on entering, but please take note of the following advice from CH:

Guys please only put down absolute definites that you are going to enter as we are going to locate expert judges for this now as there is obviously an interest and we want to do it properly, it would be embarrassing if we had 4 professionals show up to judge 20 and that turned out only to be 5 :(

Cheers!

If possible, can you also consult the BJCP mead guidelines below and specify the variety of mead you're entering as it might influence how the judges are assigned.

INTRODUCTION (Explains 24 - 26) (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/meadintro.php)
24. TRADITIONAL MEAD (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style24.php)

26. OTHER MEAD (http://www.bjcp.org/2008styles/style26.php)

Mead makers, the guidelines given above are obviously the 2008 guidelines. Since then, it has been confirmed that the 2016 Nationals will be using the 2015 style guidelines. As such, please take a look at the following PDF to ensure you are placing your meads in the right sub-categories:

Cheers.

Gary and I judged, we did our homework read the style guidelines for weeks which being honest aren't a patch on the beer ones and like horoscopes in that they are very broad on their descriptives.
We had our fault guides but didn't need them there were no real nasty nasty ones

I hadn't looked at this thread and we were totally impartial and I never would have guessed that 1,2,3!

The biggest issues were, we are judging to bjcp styles and some were incorrectly entered in the wrong cat, a mistake I heard other beer judges comment a lot on the day as well.
Ingredients were stated on the descriptor, they simply weren't there.
Same applies to beer folks if you state an ingredient even though you did use it, if its not obviously there don't state it.
That same ingredient btw may make a huge difference in the profile but if you can't taste it don't state it.

This has been said before and I'm going to repeat it, taste what you are entering with the style sheet in front of you.
If you can't do it impartially bring to a club meet and do it.
Tick boxes as otherwise you are going to be disappointed.

As stated the standard was good well done.

Next Year these will probably be judged along with wines and ciders outside of the nationals.
