Jason from the fran well is the head brewer there so there should be some very interesting beers coming out of it.
I plan to have a look around end of this week... I believe they'll host the final session of the Smithwicks homebrewing challenge (with winner announcement) next week?
It was not clear whether this is a one off or a weekly set of nights. I sent them a mail to confirm.

I'm delighted Jason is in there and there may be some change in their current offering and as a novelty I like the concept but now literally with a hundred independent breweries to choose from now in bars all over town my preference is to support those guys instead of a macro pretending to be them.
Is this a brewpub or what? There was me thinking that was illegal here.
It's their microbrewery, which they have now turned into a brewpub. They would have had to have bought a pub license to do so, that would hardly have been much trouble for Diageo though. The BeerNut has a good write-up (http://thebeernut.blogspot.co.uk/2014/11/whatever-people-say-i-am-thats-what-im.html) done on the microbrewery.
Sorry yeah I'm mixing it up with smaller breweries being allowed to sell their beer on-site. I guess there's a way around it if you can afford a license.
Is getting a pub licence the only issue though? I thought there was some other piece of ancient legislation invloved as well. With the amount of pubs closing across the country every month I would've thought getting a licence wouldn't of been that prohibitive

Just read that blog from TBN and found it an honest good read. I suppose the issue for me with all this is that it is all still controlled by the Bean counters of Diageo. The current "craft beer" rebellion against the big two, Diageo and Heineken, appears to be holding and this no doubt is what is vexing them. I stand a witness that previous attempt's in the past to simple want choice was stamped on by these two. I am not naive to believe that the big two will take their moment to strike at this rebellion and so I am always going to take the view that any initiative of the big two will not have me supporting them. :)

It's just another cynical marketing exercise aimed at correcting Guinness's (current or anticipated?) dwindling market share. Why are things like history, quality, choice so important to them now? The ever-expanding Smithwicks 'craft' is laughable at this stage.. Why even come up with names?? Why not just call them Tasteless #1, Tasteless #2 etc.?
There's much more interesting beer to be found amongst Ireland's craft breweries. At least, those that are on top on their game.

They're not actually selling beer though it's a ticketed event with samples available so you wouldn't need a public house license.

If what you say were the case then we could charge a flat fee into a Homebrew event and give out 'samples'
The only difference is that Diageo would have the duty paid.
If this were OUR only sticking point, then all we have to do is liaise with a Micro and have them pay duty on our behalf (or something like that)

Nope its how clubs/associations/theatres get out of having a public house license events are private/ticketed. Festivals etc are run under separate special licenses but are not public houses.

Isn't that how wine tastings and other courses are run?
There's been lots of debate about this, I'm sure what Diageo is doing is all above board.

fair play to that old lad ,shed with a bar and a 31 year old gf who sings and pulls pints .......living the feckin dream , if it was me id be lodging a complaint that a guard was drinking while on duty and tresspasing as he was on the poor mans property by means of decption , and attempting to pay with forgin curency ...............sneaky fuckers ..........how reliable can his evidence be after having 5 pints ? did he drive back to the station well over the limit ? all questions the judge should have asked .
wonder if i should put a collection box on my bar once its built ...........i hear singing pint pulling 31 year blond polish girlfriends can be expensive to maintain ........

By the looks of things now it is a bar serving the regular Guinness range and a few extras. And as pints are being sold ithere it must have a license of some sort. As others have said it won't break Diageo anyway.
