Was going to dry hop my batch when I found this. There was a solventy, chemical smell when I opened the FV. Anyone more experienced know what this is and if I should dump it.
Looks ok..
Looks fine. Have you tasted it as you will know if it is infected by taste. What yeast did you use.
I used Notty. I don't know what to make of the taste. It doesn't taste that bad. To me it tasted like there was something there that shouldn't be but my wife didn't get anything. It a wasn't like I had to spit it out but it wasn't exactly appealing either.
I pitched the yeast last Saturday evening so it's been in the FV almost a week. Maybe I should just leave it a few more days and see if it cleans up?
I usually get stuff like that left over - looks like hop residue. The smell can be a bit sharp/ boozey etc at the start often too - it usually settles down.
Like Dempsey says if you get an infection you'll know all about it! It would be undrinkable.
The time I had a contaminated batch there were mouldy growths on top.
Had a tiny bit of something like this on my "Pride of London porter " extract kit. It`s been in the bottle just over two weeks & tastes grand .Had the first one last night ( purely to see how it was doing you understand ). And bar needing a bit more time in the bottle ,there was no real off taste or odours that I could pick out. Mind you the kit comes with Target hops for dry hopping, so that may be covering any minor issues .

Yeah that's what it smelled like, very intense, hot and boozy. I think I'll add the dry hops and just leave it and hopefully the flavour and smell will smooth out. Cheers for the comments and advice.
