We have an option to buy a 2nd club barrel. The idea is for it to be housed near Lusk.
It'll be approx €100 and we're looking for about 12 - 14 participants so it should be less than a tenner each.
All interested say ai!

I'd say that'd be the consensus seeing as the other barrel is soured. Something clean.

Something like Jacobs beer from last night would be perfect in a barrel.
What sort of beer did he bring?
Belfast show winner. English strong ale / Barleywine
Would love to do something along those lines

"Something like Jacobs beer from last night would be perfect in a barrel."
Indeed we are looking for a big beer that can benefit from oak and whiskey notes and aging.
I think Jacobs might be too big already (if you know what I mean) for this project!

Agree about a clean beer. What about attempting a pale ale first off. Like Jacob's strong English?

So this is looking good to go. Who is going to organise the GB?
Fuck it ... count me in :P
Barrel aged old ale, another RIS, smoked imperial porter, baltic porter or english ipa ... so many ideas >:D

What needs to be organised?
Collection of funds - PayPal or cash at a meet?
What else?
Me too !
I dont mind co-ordinating the payments and collecting if that helps.
I have no interest in Sours or bateria in the barrel, the old barrel turned nasty in the end .. IMO
actually I have no interest in the old barrel and would sooner donate it to the firegods and buy a new one
- but if others want to hammer away, live and let live !
I thought the imperial stout 'soyuz' was spectacular in the end, would love to try doing something along those lines again.
We could The same recipe again. What people do with it after is up to them.
My preference would be a RIS or old ale type. We have a sour already. Good to keep one clean and one funky.
I agree with Nigel. Lets just get a new one and see how that performs and also whats with the "funky auld wan"
Well if we have all the names now, let's roll on with the collecting etc, get the recipe up and pick dates!

If the barrel is ~€100, will we say €10 each to round it out and the club coffers gets the small surplus

So would people be happy to brew the original RIS recipe again?
Really want a ris at home, so yes!
An RIS sounds excellent
If this route for a barrel doesn't work out what are our other options?
RIS, foreign extra stout, brown ale, imperial red,big porter, Boltic porter, weizenbock, old ale, English barley wine. Anything big really.
It might be difficult to keep lager temps. Would love a cask aged baltic porter but because of that will say yes to another RIS :)
If would be class alright. Age it outside over the winter next year under tarp.
Defo!
Stout first then sour when barrel becomes sour all by itself (Just like NCB Cask #1)
So after tonights meeting we agreed:
We will buy the cask through Dempsey with James transfering the club funds required (approx €100)
We we will then collect the individual moneys from the above names as and when and refund the kitty.
Simon will lead on this (with James and Brian)
Talking of casks here's a nice bit from a US publication that I drunkenly signed up to one dark night the other week:
https://beerandbrewing.com/VrOmmyoAACoA8K0t/article/8-beers-to-brew-and-the-barrels-to-age-them-in?mc_cid=baea4f2924&mc_eid=2a3546da7a (https://beerandbrewing.com/VrOmmyoAACoA8K0t/article/8-beers-to-brew-and-the-barrels-to-age-them-in?mc_cid=baea4f2924&mc_eid=2a3546da7a)
Btw: It s a pretty good magazine, with pdf version as well. I used a beersmith discount code!
I have a contact number for the barrels and will be chasing 1 or maybe 2. Do you want me to ask about 1 for ye.
Yes please Brian, as above James will sort the money asap from NCB funds and Simon is the delivery point.
The man has 120 Liter whiskey barrels and 225 Liter wine barrels. Imark and I are going to inspect them tomorrow. :)
Just my opinion (and depends on price) but I'd prefer the whiskey rather than the wine, even if we have to buy two. I've not met a beer condition in a wine barrel that was better than a whiskey one 😊
So as above and talking to Brian (Dempsey):
The Whisky barrels are Laphrohaig (V. Nice single malts) with bungs.
Yes they are only 120 litres but that may be a good thing. 6 people should be able to fill one.
Also if we buy two some of us will double up.
Also: If we don't get enough people to pay for 2 barrels (90+vat) I would suggest the NCB kitty pays the difference and then can rent out the barrel fills to those who didn'y buy.
Or You can buy 2 shares!
There are lots but we would all like toi get this moving.
What thinks ye all??
Above posts show that 13 peeps are in for this :)
However 90+vat * 2 = €221
221 / 13 = €17
Are we all happy to go?

I'm based in Drumcondra at present. Where would the barrels be kept? Just thinking in terms of getting kegs up to where its kept.
Going to kept in Lusk
