National Homebrew Club Ireland

Hello Lads and Lassies, it's that time of year again when we look for our amazing Stewards to help the NHC Competition run smoothly. 

The Fourth Annual NHC Competition is fast approaching and we need your help both in Dublin and Belfast.

We need roughly 20 stewards and 2 cellar people for the Dublin competition and about 10  and 1 cellar person for Belfast. If you have a someone else to bring along to steward please put their name down wives/husbands! I promise we'll take good care of them  :) As we have witnessed over the years, stewards really are the backbone of the whole day and without whom the day would be a fiasco!

Volunteers would be asked to be present from 9.30 in the morning until around 6 or 7 in the evening. Lunch and a pint will be included (free of charge), aswell as the super limited edition NHC polo shirt (at cost price)  8) and you will also get the opportunity to be up close and personal with all the judging action.
Your duties on the day will include running beers, in order, from the cellar to the judges, cross checking beer scores and keeping the judges timing in check.

Stewarding is also a great starting point for those wishing to further their beer education and personal judging abilities.

I will post further information about the day nearer the time, for now I am looking for your commitment to what has proven to be a great day out in past years :)

Please if you can help out on either day, Stewarding is a great way to have a birds eye view of what happens at the competitions.

Stewarding involves running beers from cellar to judges tables, ensuring that your judges have enough score sheets, pencils, water, crackers, glasses. Returning score sheets to head steward and generally keeping an eye on time for the judges (so I dont have to go round with my stick to beat people  ;) )

Stewards

Assist organizers and judges as needed.
Make sure all required materials are present at the assigned judging table.
Ensure that everything required for judging, including openers, cups, pencils, scoresheets, ice, dump buckets, water, and crackers/bread is at the assigned table prior to the scheduled start for the judging.
Bring beer for the given flight to the judging table. Double-check to be sure all of the entries assigned to the given flight are in your box. Arrange the bottles in sequential order, as specified by the judges.
Remember that some beers will contain sediment &emdash; treat them gently.
Maintain proper serving temperatures during judging. 10°C (50° F) is a good temperature for ales. Lagers may be served colder. Use ice as needed to maintain proper serving temperature.
Replenish bread, water, cups, forms, etc. as needed.
Empty dump buckets as needed or at the request of the judges.
Fill in the cover sheet and flight scoresheet at the discretion of the head judge. Check scoresheets, cover sheets, and flight sheets to be sure they have been fully and accurately completed. Point out potential errors to judges and request they correct them. Staple the cover sheets to the scoresheets.
Do not empty opened bottles or discard bottle caps until instructed to by the judges. Some entries may need additional evaluation at the end of the flight.
The judges may permit stewards to sample the entries along with them; however, stewards must refrain from attempting to influence the judging. :)

What does cellar personing mean doing?

Actually all the crates get brought up to the main judging area with the help of the stewards, the bottles are in a sequential order in the crate 1-12 and you ensure the stewards get the correct bottles out to the crate and receive the empties and are put back to the correct slot as opposed to them helping themselves.

We hit out limit of 400 beers earlier today with over 100 entries in the past 24 hours.
As we hit this 10 days in advance of close, a number of brewers who intended entering have missed out.
In order to assess the extent of missed entries, could any brewer who missed out please PM me directly?
We are not promising anything, but will see what can be done to accommodate as many members as we can.

If anyone reading this hasn't been a steward before and is thinking about volunteering, let me assure you it's absolutely brilliant craic. Much more fun than judging, I'm serious! :)

You'll get to see from the inside how the biggest brewing competition in Ireland is run, you'll see and hear the BJCP judges and professional brewers deliberate over their scoresheets, you can have a little sample of the beers, and above all, a great day of craic and talking about beer and brewing.

I've heard that the judges make the stewards taste the worst beers  >:D

It's my first time stewarding and I'm really looking forward to this!
