Title: Perlenbacher Bottles
Post by: thechevron on February 05, 2016, 01:33:40 PM
I bought a sh1t load of Perlenbacher Pils from Lidl when they were on sale, planning to use the bottles for brews, only to find out when I got home they were twist caps. I kept the caps.

Can the be re capped or are they useless?

I believe they can be recapped.
Also, I think the caps twist of too.

I twisted them off, (to drink) , but can I  just twist them back on when re capping?

You could try but don't.
The ONLY way to guarantee a reliable seal is to use a crowncapper
Twist off caps are crimped on with crowncappers

just keep an eye on the glass threads. You should be fine so long as you don't break them. (and they can be quite fragile)

People are always giving away bottles on here. Take someone up on it. Or better still if you're sure you'll keep the hobby up get into kegging sooner than later. You won't look back. Bottling is the pits and only useful for comps / gifts / high gravity you don't want in a keg for years.

How heavy is the glass?
I had a bad experience with thin lager bottles (not German, in fairness) exploding under the pressure of conditioning.
Rule of thumb as I've heard it is to only use bottles that held ales - though I'm glad to hear other opinions on this.
