Was browsing alpack.ie yesterday and today and they no longer seem to do buckets larger than 30.0lt.I could have sworn they did 40-60lt buckets previously ? :(
Can't remember ever seeing anything larger than 30 litre

"FG or not"??
If it's just for storing ingredients already in bags fine, emptying a 25kg sack of malt probably not so.
Keeping things in bags means it's easier to know what's inside/label them.
I still haven't found a decent, cheap way of storing 25kg of base grain that is airtight and lightproof.

I got 5 barrels from this guy on donedeal & am very happy with them (Tipp man to boot !!!).

They were clean, dry & sealed well. They are rodent & light proof & keep grain in pretty good nick. They are a bastard to move when full & take up a load of room (200 litres). However I swear by them for price, size & crucially ability to keep grain in good nick over many years. So far never had a problem with grain going soft or mouldy despite previously having a serious leak in my shed roof where they are stored. I would recommend them & if the guy is still selling them he previously negotiated on price if you buy higher numbers.

Can't beat a Tipp man ;) Alas, they're just too big. I have the grain in the house and need to be able to fit it into a kitchen press. Thanks for the link though, those look excellent and right on the money.
Out of curiousity, how full is one when you empty a 25Kg bag of grain into it...

Don't pour grain in to it. I put bagged grain of various sizes 1kg, 5kg & 25kg in to it. It's a bit awkward to find stuff but a simple list helps with contents. He has smaller barrels that might be an option. Measure the dimensions of your press & I will post the details of the height & diameter of the smaller barrel. Might be time to start looking at shed :) or buying a few tall upright kitchen units in Ikea. Not sure if the smaller ones would take a full 25kg bag but you could always split it in to a couple of bags. I find the malt sacks also help protect & keep the grain fresh.p

Will do cheers. It's a standard fitted kitchen; the house came with two when we bought and we still haven't converted it back :D
There is a side garage on the house, but it's far far away from where the brewing happens, so I don't tend to use it for grain.
Here it is in all it's glory, as well as how I'm currently storing my base grains; those bags live in the bottom shelf.
Dimensions are approximate (as metal measuring tape is not very flexible) circumference 120cm, height 65cm & diameter 38cm. Those large units should allow you move the shelf positions around. The barrels are very heavy duty & ugly as hell so you might want to consider some where else out sight :) They should be stackable & while I have not tried it possibly even could be stored outside. I know a cousin of mine stores calf nuts in them outside with a click tight lid fastener. Failing that find a corner of a spare room with a dedicated set of shelving units. Not sure if you could paint them some less objectionable colour like black or white.

I do want the larger buckets for storage of equipment and odds and ends mostly, however if they could also be used for brewing would be awful handy even if not essential. Basically i need to change out my fvs and was kinda hoping to find something that would both store and ferment. I know i know always asking for the very thing that cant be got. :P
