Right I mean it this time. I think I might actually have the funds to turn a working fridge into a keg. My plan is to have two taps installed on the outside of the fridge with two corny kegs inside. So as it stands I have as follows:
1. A corny keg that I can't be sure is working
2. A working fridge
What exactly will I need from here on in and where am I getting them as cheap as possible?
Things to consider:
1. I live in Ballymena (means I'm out of the metropolis but right and handy to geterbrewed)
2. I'm not in a massive rush and think it might be a online (Enterprise) topic with potential purchases via the old mobily as we head down to Brewcon in April....I have 3G til we hit the city of Newry.....I know....that in itself is a joke. It's like saying Tyrone is civilised....right Bazza.
3. I'm sure I've miscalculated my latest brews abv. It must be higher lol.
First thing to consider is the co2. Do you have a local supplier? What size are you going to use? Will you store it inside or outside the fridge? Post some pics as you go along. It'll be easier for others to comment. Once you have the gas sorted you can start thinking about a regulator, taps, John guest fittings, tubing, drip tray, more corny kegs and anything else i may have forgotten about. Sounds a bit daunting but it's worth it!!
If your planning on having two taps, it might be worth getting 3 or more kegs. I.e. Two on tap, one conditioning/carbonating etc. so maybe double check you fridge has expansion space.
As for Co2, I don't live anywhere near a supplier but was able to get a 2.5kg bottle from aj in bray and a 10kg bottle shipped from iedepot to me.
What kind of fridge do you have? I got CO2 in Belfast. £80 filled bottle which is yours to keep and £20 a refill. It's too tall for an undercounter fridge so I've drilled a hole in the side of my undercounter fridge which works well.
Kegs are cheap at thehomebrewcompany.ie so you might as well max out your fridge capacity.
3/16 beer line is key in a nice tidy fridge as well as pouring the perfect pint. About 2m will be more than enough with some JG fittings to allow you to fit standard 3/8 connections. Otherwise get compensator taps.
