I made a milk stout today and would like to add a subtle orange flavour to it. Its now in the the fridge at 19.
I have read in my homebrew book that orange peel can be added after 4 days or so . But the book fails to elaborate any further.
Can I use normal oranges from Tesco and if so, how much to give 23l a hint of orange...
Thanks
Kenny..
2 or 3 oranges. valencia seem to work well.
only the orange rind, not the white behind it.
I usually add to the boil, but I guess you could put the rinds in a mug and cover them with boiling water to sanitize, then add to primary.
Thanks. Did you grate them of use a knife?
I grate them using the fine grater.
either way will be ok so long as you don't take the pith
I was wondering if anyone would notice! :D
I used a 28g packet of sweet orange peel in an APA I brewed before Christmas. I added it for 10 minutes during the boil and it was a 12L batch. The result was barely noticeable to be honest. If I were to do this again, I'd probably add freshly grated zest to the boil and probably during secondary fermentation or dry hopping.
