Title: How long does crushed grain keep?
Post by: PCBrewer on April 28, 2016, 01:21:56 PM
I have a few bits and pieces of crushed grain lying about (all in sealed containers), but i have had some of it now maybe 6 months.
How long does grain keep or is this lot for the bin?
Is it worth trying a bit of a larder clearout beer from it. Its mainly a mixture or maris otter, ppilsner and cystal

Chew it and if it does not taste mouldy and soggy then you are ok. Aroma malts suffer the most.

As several speakers referred to in brewcon... Grind and make ur beer just as u do coffee beans. Fresher de better and it DOES make a big difference

My problem is, i dont have a  mill, so i buy it already ground.

I might just dump it, id say its about 7/8 kg of grain in total, so not the end of the world, but would have been enough to make a batch

Based on personal experience, you can get away with roasted malts but base malt I'd want freshly crushed. I used roasted grain crushed 9 months previously in a stout that scored a 38 in the nationals a few years back.

I love the smell of freshly crushed malt. That in alone is worth having a mill for me.

As I am old enough to have seen the original cinema release of Apocalypse Now:

"I love the smell of fresh crushed malt in the morning. You know, one time we had a mash tun, we mashed it for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up and sniffed it. We didn't find one spider or bug, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that malt smell, the whole one tun. Smelled like Victory.

Someday this brew's gonna end... "
