Has anyone ever used a garage inspection pit as a cellar. Would be handy to lager beer. The one im thinking of useing has concrete covers and a drain built in. It has'nt been used in years.
My father built one in his garage, and it was hardly ever used, and that's what he ended up using it for. However I have seen some in other garages and they were quite smelly, the whiff of old engine oil seems to be hard to get rid of and might taint anything stored there?
Well you could end up with a beer like this then,
They'd be grand in sealed boxes as nothing will permeate glass, suspect volatiles all gone at this stage just leave one down there a week and see what happens. Couple of skinny shelving units and would be great storage.
Let it vent a couple of hours and see if you get a smell off the box or the glass. Can't beat a bit of glass sniffing just dont get caught ;D
I was concerned about lagering in plastic fermenters and picking up taints

People lager in plastic? Thought you'd get oxygen pickup over that period

I had a lager in plastic at 1c...I forgot about it then time and work and new baby meant I didn't get to bottle it for 18 mths... It was very clear and crisp and as I hadn't hopped it too much it was very drinkable but a bit bland

21 days. Not a big deal. It then gets a secondary lager in the keg :)
Cool. Everyday is a schoolday :)

Sorry yep no drums or plastic buckets (3 months) then it turns into cardboard city, hydrocarbons present, it will be a write off, only glass or stainless.
Would it be worthwhile trying to powerhose it using hot water + some kind of soap based cleaning agent?

So you're going to keep your beer down in a pit in a garage? "It puts the dry hop on it's skin, or else it gets the hose again!" -Creepy!
Seriously, though sounds like a great idea to me!
